Wikileaks Cables: Key Revelations
November 28, 2010 - 06:25 PM

Wikileaks has released a cache of 250,000 secret messages sent by US diplomatic staff. Here are some of the key issues the documents reveal, according to detailed reports by the New York Times and Guardian newspapers.
China
Cables show a concern over the alleged use of large scale computer hacking by the Chinese government. Cables claims that China has employed a network of hackers and private security experts 2002 and that they have hacked into US government and business computers, those of Western allies and the Dalai Lama. A Chinese contact is quoted in the cables telling the US embassy in Beijing that the Chinese government had been behind the hacking of Google's computer systems in the country in January.
Iran
The cables quote several Arab leaders and their representatives, urging the US to carry out an attack on Iran to bring an end to its suspected nuclear weapons program.King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia wanted the US to "to cut the head off the snake," continue reading...

Thanks to all the guys who leaked the substantial info. T
he personal comments about the 'terminologies' American administrators use to refer to world leaders is hardly of any use but more of entertainment news and offensive/embarrassing to those who are involved.
But the info on terrorism, war, Iraq, Iran,Pakistan, Nukes, and other shady deals actually supports what many have been shouting over and over again!

The wikileaks reports only confirm what most people have suspected. I doubt there will be any substantial change in the way countries operate or handle diplomatic relations.

Wikikeaks was supposed to be an exposer of wrong doing around the world (Like the torture of prisoners) But this latest lot is just a spiteful act by someone who has done it because he can.
Everybody says things and feels things they would rather their friends didn't know. This leak is the equivilent of someone stealing your personal diary and sending snippets to yours friends and family.

I agree with bob to a degree that it is like looking into someone's personal diary. However, someone's personal diary is unlikely to have information that's harmful to very many others. These wikileaks on the other hand tell us what our leaders are saying and doing. Even if these things do not have any direct impact on our lives, they do have some impact and because these are politicians, they have at least some impact on a large number of people.

Jonah.
How does the U.S ambassador's private opinion on Gordon Brown, effect the public. The only way it effects us is in the souring of relations between the U.S and Britain.
Maybe that was the idea? If so, like all these nasty little childish whispers, that try to turn one friend against another they fail.
Was there any important information released in this last diluge. Anything any reasonably intelligent person could not have worked out for themselves.
'The saudi's are worried about Iran getting nuclear weapons' NO surely not, well knock me down with a feather.

Did we have any hard evidences before which showed that under the order of U.S. Secretary of State the U.S. diplomats were spying on UN officials to such an extent of trying to steal their credit card numbers?

The reason I feel strongly that this recent disclosure is more than simply "diary stealing" is the intense reaction for the powers-that-be.
It's a classic case of "he who protest too much" - if there was nothing to hide in these leaks, or they are somehow fabricated, why would the US government in particular gone to such lengths to discredit them?

(Me thinks she doth protest too much)
The intense reaction is partly due to the fact they don't know whats coming next and partly because it is just plain wrong. A lot of negotiation whether business (Myself) or politics is about what you say to who and when.
For example:
I might inform my board that a certain employee is working below standard, but decide to wait and see if the situation fixes itself. If it does that employee might never need to know about my period of doubt. Some spiteful, nasty piece of work forwarding my private email onto said employee could cause a lot of damage to both me and the employee for no reason.

I think Assange has gone overboard this time with the leaks.
While some of it might be useful for the people to know, some things should be kept private in order to preserve the harmony between nations. There is no necessity for the public to know the the opinions of US leaders of other world leaders. This is just meant to create strain between nations.
I think there is a limit to what should be exposed.

Bob (thanks for that, you knew what I meant
While I accept that this may harm some political relationships the example you give is slightly skewed.
We are talking about democratically elected people here (or at least those in the employ of democratically elected leaders) and so by definition they should be answerable to us.
These "leaks" are giving the electorate the chance to see what they voted for in real terms - it's no suprise that they are trying so hard to shut it down. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canvas Prints

They are the same. As a director of a company I am answerable to the shareholders. but they have to trust me. If everything I say is published it makes my job impossible. Imagine negotiating with a printers if they already knew what I had been quoted.
Now imagine trying to negotiate with the Taliban if they knew what I'd said to the Saudi's

Good point well made sir, it will certainly harm international relations.
To clarify, my point is that this is not the only reason they are trying to shut down wikileaks. I agree it is an important one that should be addressed but it's not the only reason in my opinion.
I'm sure there are many articles in their posession regarding domestic issues which have got the politicians running scared.
Maybe i'm wrong, and i'm willing to accept that if i am proven so. However it is my firm belief that international relations is not the only thing the politicians are trying to protect (namely their own corrupt-asses!). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Canvas Prints
