worried..

I am quite worried. I just read this news story:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3272815.stm
Religiously motivated acts of violence is an ugly, ugly thing. I cannot imagine how people proclaiming to be Muslims in Turkey can defend doing such a horrendous attack on a Jewish place of worship on the Sabbath.. The very word Islam comes from a root in Arabic which means to make peace with someone. This act of terrorism is cruel and inhumane, and I cannot see how they (Eastern Islamic Raiders' Front) can possibly face themselves after this. Yes, Israel is doing terrible things against the Palestinian people, and Israel's human rights record is a shame. But to thus attack Jews in other countries because of this is to mix the issues, it is to attack innocent people, and it is only to help escalate the circle of violence further. I am worried that we are entering a very de-stabilised period. The US's "War on Terrorism" will become an even uglier war, and there will be LOTS of eggs broken to make that omelette. We will throw human rights out the window (think of Guantanmao Bay), we will throw our privacy out the window (think of the Patriotic Acts), and we might become ever more fanatical in our aim to wipe out terrorism. It is a sad sad business.
We NEED to support the moderate muslims, the intellectuals, the peace-loving members of the Islamic population. We need to make sure that no more muslims are radicalized and coming to a point where they feel that "everyone is against them", and then as a result their mentality turns to a "i don't care about the others either". To blow a bomb in the face of other people becomes much easier then.

Define 'support' (as in 'We NEED to support the moderate muslims, the intellectuals...').

I can proclaim myself a Muslim and explode into bits of flesh together with an unwitting group of people, but does that really make me a 'true' Muslim?

good question.
well, support as in any other way we can support any political movement in any country. by quoting in our media.
if the only impression we get of muslims is from the hardcore radicalists, then no doubt our view of them as a group of people will be twisted.
we need to pay more attention to the moderate forces in Islam, just as in the American politics. if we just listen to Bin Laden, or Rumsfeld and the other Hawks, then gee we can get a really black/white view of the world.

That's really true. All that we see in the media are the stories of the Muslim extremists - the ones who blow themselves up and preach the destruction of the West. We've all heard the adage "there's no news like bad news", and this is proof. We hear about the Osama bin Laden's and the Hamas' of the world, but never those who quietly work for peace and co-operation with all parties involved.
A nice change from this was when Shirin Ebadi won the Nobel Peace Prize. She has been working for women's rights in a peaceful way, and has now been justly rewarded for her work. We need the media to cover more cases like Ms Ebadi's so that we know that there is more out there than just the extremists.

yes!
the role of the media, as the fourth state power, is crucial. we need to let other voices be heard. we need to also update ourselves more on the thousands of other cases like Shirin Ebadi. Well, not all of them
muslims must also not be afraid to express their opinion because they are afraid of backlashes. we must not let Hamas take Islam and the millions of muslims hostage!

A moderate Muslim

I consider myself a moderate muslim, and they are plenty of us out there. The problem is that we don't have access to the media like Osama bin laden, I wonder why ????
let us not forget that most victims of islamic extremist are muslim, like in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. We are the silent majority. When extremist hit, they don't have consideration of who they are hitting, for them is not who die, but how much the act has shake the world, that is their aim.
