UNV: questions on Volunteerism and Education

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is currently working on the United Nations first State of the World's Volunteerism Report (SWVR), to be launched on 5 December 2011 (International Volunteer Day). The aim of the report is to help break down stereotype views as to what volunteerism is and what it brings and thus ensure that its potential contribution to addressing some of the major challenges of peace and development faced today is maximized.
One important issue is the contribution of volunteerism to education, particularly in those areas of the world where universal primary education has not yet been achieved. In this sector, volunteerism can indeed lead to significant improvements by involving communities in supporting the work of paid personnel and compensating where resources are scarce, for example in remote and rural areas.
We invite you to contribute your thoughts and experiences by answering the following questions:
• Have you views on any critical issues related to volunteerism and education in remote areas and in developing countries in general?
• What do you believe are the most evident risks of involving volunteers in education, and how can they be minimized? (Kindly support your answers with examples)
One possible danger seems to lie in the mismatch between short-term volunteering experiences and the longer-term educational path. How can sustainability be ensured and fragmentation avoided in the learning process?
Your contribution will be highly valued and appreciated.
