UNV: questions on Volunteerism and Environment
October 12, 2010 - 12:01 PM

Hello,

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is currently working on the United Nations first State of the World's Volunteerism Report (SWVR), to be launched on 5 December 2011 (International Volunteer Day). The aim of the report is to help break down stereotype views as to what volunteerism is and what it brings and thus ensure that its potential contribution to addressing some of the major challenges of peace and development faced today is maximized.

Here we would like to open a discussion on volunteerism devoted to environmental issues. Achieving environmental sustainability and trying to reverse the effects of global warming are high priorities of our time. Therefore it is crucial to investigate the roles and impacts of volunteering on fields like land degradation, desertification, ecosystem management, environmental governance, conservation, and resource efficiency.

We invite you to contribute your thoughts and experiences by answering the following questions:

- Are there any examples you can provide of the contribution of volunteerism in the environmental field?

- Advocacy for the global environmental agenda seems to be concentrated among those who have their material needs satisfied and can, therefore, focus on post-materialist values. What differences, if any, do you perceive between low- and high-income countries with regard to the involvement in environmental volunteering?

- The expression “environmental racism” refers to the transfer of pollution to already distressed and poor areas and communities. Have you seen any examples of reactions and initiatives that these affected groups have come up with in response to environmental threats to their health and livelihood?

Your contribution will be highly valued and appreciated.
