[Poll] Youth and HIV/AIDS in Somalia
July 21, 2010 - 02:40 PM
|
|
Somalia has been more devastated by civil unrest since the former military government 1991.
HIV is taking an enormous toll on the youth: Nearly all HIV/AIDS new cases in Somalia are youth (women and men aged 15–24).
Somalia is amongst low level or concentrated countries with lowest AIDS infection rates, the available information on HIV prevalence and risk behaviours has been limited, leaving communities vulnerable to the virus through lack of information.
Please participate our Poll to this Thread.
How can youth participate actively to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS in Somalia?

What Somalia is going through currently is grim and the world should come together and rally behind the Somali people for peace. My country, in fact; several countries have been down the lane of civil strife before and what Somalia needs is a solution to the conflict situation they are experiencing.
In a conflict situation, there is always a break down of social services and in most cases, even the most basic of human needs become out of range for the common. The power imbalance between those who have and those who dont becomes so wide and often times, the young people (girls are more vulnerable) are forced to trade sex in a desperate bid to make ends meet. The first step should be pushing for a lasting solution to the Somalia conflict. The youths in Somalia, Africa and the whole world should press their governments not to be indifferent to the Somalia issue. I have worked with a Youth club in Uganda to fight Hiv/Aids and I can share our best practices. Email your questions to rhelmzrt@gmail.com.

Thanks for post.
Somalia has been without an effective central government for almost two decades and the only hope for change is in changing the leadership. The youth have to realize their role in re-establishing peace in Somalia and the time has come for them to take up this responsibility instead of leaving their country behind no mercy at the hands of Warlords and Faction Leaders.
Certain mechanisms are required to put in place and to make sure that youth will contribute positively to rebuilding their home country "Somalia".
