The Bigger Picture - Global Warming
December 29, 2009 - 05:53 PM

when you are cast off into the vast space of the atmosphere and you get further and further away from everything known to mankind, one glance behind your shoulder and through the window of the space shuttle to that beautiful planet we call home is more than enough to make you realize how utterly precious and incredible it is- i can only imagine it being so when i see pictures of the planet earth taken by hubble or any other satelite out there above us.

http://nikapika.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/planet-earth-1024x819.jpg

the darkness and the open, unknown and almost sinister space in its blackness everywhere, and than, this beautiful round sphere covered by indescribable mixtures of white, blue and green in the middle of it all, glowing. so breathtaking.

the mother of us all.

than it crosses my mind what happens down there, on its surface. human hands destroying the forests, killing the animals; man going against one another, putting up borders, fighting- sometimes for the sake of nothing more than accumulating a bigger amount of money- which is just a colored paper cut in small pieces, given value by the same those who hold the most of it and with the strongest value for those who have have almost none.

do not misunderstand me, each of us has the desire for affluence within themselves whether it is a stronger or a weaker one, but why do we forget that bigger picture along the way to success and wealth and start sacrificing not only our ideals and beliefs for it (which happens in most cases) but also destroy that beauty that gave us life?

today mankind faces one of the greatest challenges so far which is global warming. it is a tangent to each and everyone of almost seven billion souls on this planet and this introduction was pointed towards those who held the future of all of us in copenhagen just a couple of weeks ago and have decided to leave its resolving pending, instead of focusing on it immediately as time is a luxury we lost sometime ago when the both poles started rapidly melting and all the natural disasters that ever happened on the surface of the earth intensified. can it be that economy comes before life itself? because that is at stake here-

life.

if a new strategy for greenhouse gases emission is not thought of immediately to replace the kyoto protocol once it goes out of power (and kyoto itself was not ratified by the biggest two world polluters - china and the states, who together emit 41% of ghgs), the consequences will transform the earth.

why are we letting this issue slide? how come the global decision makers are not aware of the urgency of this problem?

will it be too late once we realize the power we have had today in affecting this issue, which is slipping away from us with each new, warmer, sunrise?
