It is said that ‘a man and woman can never be good friends’. Do you agree with this or not? Can you illustrate why you do or not?

man and woman can actually be friends...they can actually be good friends and best friends too..
friendship is actually a feeling that haves you trust and faith...and most of the time motiation for betterment.
IN friendship you do not have as committment and time to spend like you need to do for a love relatinship. In friendship, you are not as binded as in love and you can be yourself with your friends..
so if you find someone with whom you can be yourself, and dont need to be much committed, you will automatically be happy with the friendship, whatever sex they be.
so girls and boys can always be friends

yes men and men can always be good friends. I am a female with many male friends. I feel comfortable talking to them just as I would with a female. If these are not my real friends then I guess I am just deluding myself, and I will continue to buying into this delusion probably until I die.

I believe man and woman can be good friends. I have quite a few male friends who i can talk to, hang out with, etc. However they always tell me in the beginning men feel like they cant be friends with girls. It takes them longer to get used to that idea that the female. I dont know why though. Would be interesting to know.

I think the only cases in which a man and woman CAN'T be good friends is if there is misunderstandings in their relationship e.g. perhaps one of them wants more than the other or perhaps one is still holding onto bitter feelings if they had history in the past.
Maybe it would be more interesting to ask whether or not your culture, religion or society restricts a man and woman friendship?
(I'd like to know since in the western society it is pretty free.)

Yes, I feel that a man and a woman can be very good friends. The man can offer certain things that the woman does not have, different opinions, way of thikning, etc and vice versa.
There can be restrictions though, if the persons do not have a mutual feeling to one another.

A friend once did a thesis on this. She did a lot of research and interviewed a lot of men and women who were friends. She interviewed both who were in the relationship and did not include them if the other person did not want to be interviewed. This allowed her to see how the man viewed the friendship and how the woman viewed the same friendship.
While it is true that they are good, close friends, surprisingly, she found out that men and women cannot be "just friends." One or both were secretly attracted to the other which in the end causes the breakdown of the friendship.

I will take the contrarian view and disagree with everyone...
If the woman is beautiful, sexy and smart... A man will pretend he only wants friendship to gain her trust... with the expectation and hope of a possible future romance and sex. This is a common guy strategy which I myself have put to good use with great success... Now, All of you should go find someone to read the KamaSutra with tonight !!

Speaking with the wisdom of old age (or the confusion of early senility), I too doubt how well men and women can be "just friends." I have always found friendship to be preliminary to a more intimate friendship. There seems to be an inevitable progression that might be biologically driven by being physically near the opposite sex. Our minds might be trying to convince us we are just friends, but our bodies have ideas of their own and send their own signals. I once thought that would be an advantage of the Internet. We can really just concentrate on the words without being distracted by appearance, BUT now I wonder if even our words convey subtle messages we are not aware of, but our subconscious picks up. Anyway, for what's it's worth: I KNOW guys are thinking about sex at least 90% of the time!

Hi Prieten, I think you nailed that one solid my friend...Your insights are both interesting and useful. You have the advantage of age and experience which allows you to look back on life with a clearer perspective.
I can't wait to experience a few serious loving relationships with as many members of the opposite sex as possible, so that when I finally settle down permanently... I can be certain that I have both a friend and lover in the same person.
