open sourcing takingitglobal.org

i wonder what will happen if tig did what linus did for linux - open sourcing it and inspiring and mobolizing 1000s of volunteer programmers around the world to develope the site 24/7 365days a year? or are you guys already doing it? The site is already really great but can't imagine what this site will become next if you really open source it! (maybe the defacto standard internet portal software for the masses?)

Well... we do invite any experianced programmers who are proficent in php, html and hopefully SMARTY too to help us.
One thing that you might not know, is that we licence a lot of code to other companies. If you can imagine, most of our income for general operations is generated through the licencing of our software.

more in depth...

You make a great comment xu - one thing we have already done is quickly incorporated many ideas and feedback that members have given us over the last few years -- as quickly as possible!
Right now TIG is able to sustain itself as an organization through three main sources of funding: grants from governments, grants from corporations, and reselling and licensing our unique community technology platform to other youth organizations and general non-profit groups!
Also, we are currently working hard to upgrade our platform to support multilingual functionality and document the entire system we've developed to-date to better enable new staff and volunteers to get involved and understand how things work.
In the future, I will bring up the idea for consideration: making some or all of TakingITGlobal's community technology developed by a more open group of people. Over the next months, we will continue to work hard to improve the platform, build important and innovative functionality onto it, and make it as stable as possible.
We are always looking for PHP-savvy programmers to join our team as volunteers or on internships we have open! Those interested can e-mail jobs@takingitglobal.org with your resume and interests.

English only I would assume. I don't think anyone in our office is fluent is French.. I certainly don't think anyone knows French tech speak...
And all communication will be in English, so I would think that an English resumé would be much better anyway.
Oh, and internships are only available at our HQ in Toronto. Volunteers may volunteer from any location.

I want to Volunteer!

Hi,
I am a web and graphic designer from Lahore, Pakistan.
I am not a professional but rather an amateur and do programming and scripting in the time i get free from my studies. I am particularly facinated by the TIG e-cards section and think there is alot of room for improvement in it and will love contributing to it. For it we can use the PHP GD library to make it more dynamic.
You can see my resume at
