Sadly, I fear there is no cure, only will power and abstinence and a lot of help from friends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jo Devizes knows a womens website that is rather good.

No, the current research supports that alcoholism is a potentially fatal disease which alters the biochem. Patterns of the brain and results in symptoms that manifest in life-threatening changes in biochemprocesses and physical changes, such as metabolism, atrophy of brain tissue, and is primary in many others diseases such as liver, heart, kidney, pancreatic disease, and skin cancer, among others. One may abstain from alcohol, but the disease is arrested or slowed in its advancement, rather than cured. Just as those with lupus, MG, MS may live out their lives with disease, alcoholics live out their lives with the disease while managing symptoms through abstention. Sober is a realization of behavior which controls symptoms, not a cure. The addiction is lifelong, even if controlled. The greatest symptom is apparent when the alcoholic fails to abstain. Certainly there are cases of dementia, atrophy, and withdrawal associated with the disease and an alcohol dependence.
All of that said, the greatest problem in society seems to be defining among the non-medical ranks what constitutes or defines "alcoholism" with consistency. There are, of course, symptoms listed in the medical model of the disease, and classified in medical and mental health diagnoses, yet there seems to be confusion in layperson terms of the differences between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency/addiction (and to confound things further), symptomology, etiology (causes and progression variables) and epidemiology (distribution). Some lay persons wish to insist that alcoholism is merely drug addiction, but research defies this. Still, the old model and lack of understanding of the disease appears to persist, particularly among the less educated and poorer of our populations.

Alcoholism is a terrible disease that affects a lot of people in many ways, from the people who consumes the alcohol to those who surrounds the abuser. There is an impact on Alcoholism it hurts families and has taken a toll on the country's health care system, and contribtes to illness and deaths. According to the Prestigious European medical Journal "The Lancet" "Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning ("About Marijuana"par 2)". Those deaths are just from alcohol poisoning; According to "Impact of Alcoholism and Alcohol Induced Disease on America" they said that "40 percent of Violent Crimes committed are by alcohol abusers".
Alcoholism has played a role in my life for the past 15 years, I wasn't the abuser, but I am the devastated family member that was affected by an alcoholic. The saddest and most difficult part is watching your loved ones killing themselves quickly or slowly depends on the consumption, you really can't help the abusers unless they admit their an alcoholic and they want help. The pharsed that was famously used in my home was "I'm not an Alcoholic", I must have heard those words a thousand times. There is no cure for that person who doesn't want to be cured.

I think I have found a three stage process for a type of treatment for alcoholism. The first step would be the intervention. In the past treatment providers believed that alcoholics should be confronted but recent studies show that being compassionate and showing empathy towards them has been much more efficient. The second step is the detoxification process, which is done in a controlled and supervised setting in which medications relieve symptoms. This process usually takes anywhere from 4 to 7 days. Examination of other medical problems is necessary because liver and blood clotting is very common with alcoholics. Eating a balanced diet with vitamin supplements is important. Complications can occur with alcohol withdrawal, such as delirium tremens which could be fatal. Depression or other mood disorders should be evaluated and treated as well. Often alcohol abuse develops from efforts to self treat an illness. Or in other words drink the problems away. The final stage in the rehabilitation process after the detoxification is alcohol recovery or rehabilitation. These programs usually offer counseling, psychological support, nursing and medical care. Therapy involves education about alcoholism and its effects. Many of the staff members at rehab centers are recovering alcoholics that serve as role models to the patients. These programs can be inpatient, where the patient stays inside the facility or outpatient where the patient can attend the program while living at home. Hope this helps!

On the other hand, without alcohol when you wake up, that is the best you are going to feel for the rest of the day. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jo Devizes knows a womens website that is rather good.

Pretty interesting, Louis. If it could be done in 3 stages, you might be ahead of AA with the 12 step program!
