[Poll] School or tv, what would you choose?
October 29, 2003 - 06:26 AM
|
|
I found out recently that by the time a student graduates from high school they will have spent 50% more time watching television than being in class. If that was true, than shouldn't kids know more about television then a subject like math? Also I find this hard to belive because if a student is in school for 5 hours plus lunch, it would be hard to do at least 5 hours of tv a night.
by the end of high school kids watch 50 % more tv than watching a teacher
i think this could be true
(21 votes for 70%)
no way
(9 votes for 30%)

TV is Vital ,school is obligatory

TV teaches more then what school does.
Personaly I have learned more from TV then from School, would you belive it?
I am sure ma wont , but it is the reality.
I have learned a language which 200 million people in South Asia speak (URDU) only by watching TV and lestiening to it from TV, no lessons no courses , nothing , I can even write it .
Its a very bright example of how positive TV can be.

Well... we have to take that with a grain of salt. That is an average. And if they watch TV over 7 hours of TV on average per school night, I can't image they actually go to 5 hours of school at the same time
I wonder where this study was conducted and what the demographics are.
And interesting enough, I learn a lot from TV too. I mean, I learn a lot in class, but many people also learn things watching TV whether or not they realise that they learned something. Now, it might not have been something useful to learn, but they probably did learn something. I mean, I can give you thousands of quotes and scenes from Simpsons episodes. This isn't useful, but I have still learned it

Well i can see how t.v and watching it , for 5 houres a day one would tend to learn something ( im sure if i looked at a fly for 5 houres i would learn something ....lol ) but t.v does have a wide varaity of , things to take in , but if u think about it , what if u spend thoses 5 houres , instead of watching t.v actually doing something else ( reading a book , ect ) not even school ( i think personly school gets us ready for bussines life not all the other stuff) even though reading would only cover one subject u might get alot more out of it ......reading is only on example

Well,if you look at it like that, there are many decisions. I am saying that there is more than 1 way to learn. This thread may not be about education but it may lead to the thought of it. Both school and television have its own advantages and disadvantages. You may learn some media different from the other choice. We now have both choices. The people that have experienced both school and TV might be hard to make a decision. The point is that I think that you can learn from everything we do though our lives everyday. If I were to choose the choice of TV (television), I would learn by pictures, music and action; movement. If I were to choose school,i would have to do homework and listen to the teacher all through the 6 ½ hours. Some people may take that in consideration. Overall, technology has affected how we get our media. In my opinion,I think you would learn better and faster in school because you have to do cover everything through the whole year. There is also a title that some people take in consideration: if they have the money to pay for what they live on,so that would affect the way you receive your media.(news, programs, weather)

I would say we do learn more from television than we do in school. In school you have to study to be able to remember what you are being taught. THere are notes that constantly have to be written down and you have to sit through many lectures. So sometimes it can be boring and students may choose not to listen or study. When watching television it is entertaining and things might be remembered more easily. For instance ads on tv are drilled into you head constantly and forgetting about them would be hard.

I think watching tv is a good thing. Definatly a good thing you learn about social issues through tv shows. But of course to much can be bad. People who watch alot of tv should understand there are tons of more fun things out there you could be doing! I go to school, and I have tennis and Acting classes. Extracurricular activities are by far more fun than sitting down and watching another re-run of Punk'd on MTV. On average I watch 10hours of tv a week! About one hour a day Monday through Friday. Then on the weekends I watch alot of tv. Abuot 2 or 3 hours each day.:P

Hello,
I believe very strongly that school is still the primary while TV is secondary. There is no doubt that we learn a lot from Tv but school is the the basis for anything in life. You must be educated b4 you can understand some things even in TV.
According to migay ,most of what we think, know, or act come from the media and these are only complimenting the education and information we got from school.
This is my opinion anyway.

well it's true that students would watch 50% more on tv than to their teachers. and the number of students that are doing this.. is increasing. all we ever talk about is what happen on that or this, some ppl depend on tv to have a social status.
i would chose school.. that sounds so geeky.. but it is true.. i have a future that i want.
we should let the students realize that.. tv is just media >entertainment< not life

Educative experiences of impact of television in Mexico an India

I agree with Hugh... I think children, teens and youth can learn a lot of television, as well as from school. And parents too, for example.
And not just of The Simpson, but from a lot of programs, cartoons, soap operas, etc...
I remember that in the history of soap operas in Mexico, a national television company developed a series of soup operas in the seventies with social orientation. One was about to prevent and regulate birth control, the success of the soup was great, and the growth of the population was down over the years. The television entered into the houses of the families -and seventy youths minds- and educated people to think about the problems of a big population. India has related experiences with the same impacts.
However, we have to remember that media are first of all companies. And in this way, their priorities are economical, later educational.

Hey Everyone,
I agree with those of you who say education is important, however I also think that with the right quality of t.v. and amount of time spent watching t.v. is a major factor. For example,a documentary on a subject may be on at the same time as a cartoon program.Even though the documentary may be more educational , many kids would much rather watch the cartoon show. I also think that the enviroment in which you grow up in is important also. A child may grow up in a home without a t.v., that doesn't mean they are intellecuatially superior to those who grow up watching t.v. I'm just saying that it depends on the circumsatances.
Talk to you guys later!

Well, I believe that you can learn something from both television and school, but sometimes you learn things they don't teach you at school, on TV. So it's ironic that you'd think television wouldn't teach you anything.
