When you turn on the tv, and search for a channel to watch, chances are that 90% of the time it is an ad. Some commercial breaks have super long advertisements( boring, ain't it?) and some channels are just for advertising. Who in their right mind would watch a 1 hour ad about a knife, or a pill?!?!?!?!?!?

A: The long commercials are called INFOMERCIALS.
B: A channel that does nothing but advertise things is rather pointless and wasteful.
C:Who in their right mind would watch a 1 hour ad about a knife, or a pill?!?!?!?!?!? Answer: Some people would if they're bored.

It's true that too much commercial ads can be boring and meaningless, but there is always a possibility to learn something new. If you don't want just to be bored by TV commercials you can put some effort in watching them differently. It's good to watch TV ads not only as a consumer, but also trying to see it with the 'eyes of pros'. I sometimes used to analyse what/how/why they did what they did in some commercials. I used to go to festivals and workshops of TV spots and commercials when I was studying marketing communications and I can tell you that advertising is neither boring nor aggresive when you learn more about it, it can become even - passion. I was also bored before, but think about it that some persons are bored by football or box, while some others adore it. By my opinion it is not so important to analyse boredom, but to analyse the impact that advertising in media has to our society. We can't ignore it so what can we do? We can improve it if we know how. And we can make the real difference if we know why we want to affirmate something or do something differently or make people think differently. (Besides, the impact and the earnings in media and advertising industries are as high and attractive as in top professional sport fields.

I agree with all of you. Some of the infomercials give false information. Like the ones about creams and other things. Some of the people I know, have bought these products and they were not even a teeny bit satisfied with the results. They said that it worked only for a day and then you are back to your normal self. The way the infomercials work, they make it sound as though the product works all the time. I personally think the products that the infomercials try to sell are not worth it. I also think that infomercials sell the products at a higher price. They just say that you need to pay only “3 payments of $25.95 or 2 payments of $54.89” but they are really making you pay more.

One hour ad? Thats madness. Which channel will host that and which company will afford that also? It must also be very boring.

Advertising isn't just on TV, it's everywhere (as I'm sure you all realise). What I really don't like is how films are starting to be taken over. Like I remember seeing ads on TV a few years ago for the same shaver used by James Bond or some rubbish like that. Ridiculous.
And commercial breaks are so long! In the past I've seen something like 6mins advertising for under 15 minutes of the actual show.
One other thing: I hate the way nearly all advertising is targeted at young people, especially in the case of, let's say, McDonald's. This is one reason why there's such a big problem with obesity in the UK at the moment. And have you seen how many toy/game commercials come on during children's programmes???
Also, young people are blatantly one of the biggest consumer groups in modern society and therefore have a big economic value, but hardly any decision-makers want to listen to us.
All of the above = some of the reasons I very rarely watch TV anymore. (the other main one being it's mostly junk, reality TV and random "celebrity" game shows).
PS. sorry for the rant!

I beleive that advertising is the most powerful influence in the world. It is the people behind ads who can either direct them negatively/positively, but who''s to say what the defintion to that is? commercials and ads aren't that bad, they pay for the shows we watch, so whats a couple minutes of ads?

well i suppose we watch shows between commercials instead of commercials between shows !!!
sometimes they arent that bad esp when one's favourite show is going on and one desperately wants to answer a 'call'...then the advertisements are definitely a welcome reprive
I agree that advertisements are very essential as without them we will be clueless about the choice of products available in the market .
but certain kind of blatant and desperate marketing gimmicks really annoys me ...I can recall a bollywood movie recently which ran an ad for a mouth freshner throughout the movie ....every body in the movie was offering each other ' Pass Pass'( name of the product) .
They are neccessay but there should be some limit on their intrusion ...
Cheers
Anu

check out the latest way to bombard us with advertisements !
Hi-tech adverts to arrive on the Tube
em>Replacing posters on the walls opposite the platforms from the start of next year, the advertisements will be shot across from projectors installed above passengers' heads.

Here in Bangladesh many people are getting annoyed to watch so many advertisements in TV. Here is a saying that we watch drama in between advertisements. Same thing is going to happen even in the news. So, when someone wants to watch TV news he/she has to hold the remote control in his hands so that they can change the station when add starts in a channel.

Advertisement is an essential and inseparable part of show business....
Whether it takes a bad or annoying flavor for public thats another question.. but one cannot have show business and no adds... no inthe modern world..
and lets not forget that one of the wolrd's most admired companies - Google- built a fortune on online ads.. so also buiness world is benefiting from it..
If used cleverly and not exagerated i guess everyone will benefit from advertisements..

I do agree with mnopq. It's unavoidable for media as it's source of revenue . But advertisement should not make the audience so much annoyed that he may stop watching that stations programs.
