I think it's the flu. It comes around every year. Every year people die from the flu. Statistically it is not young/middle aged folks but other 'at-risk' groups. Infants, the elderly and people with other health complications. The flu shot is a version of last years flu virus without the lethal edge. Like the measles, tetanus and Rubella shots you have had a number of times throughout your life without thinking about it. Same process. The only difference is that influenza adapts/changes every year so you need to get a new shot every year if you want to stay up to date, rather than once in a lifetime or every decade.
The bottom line is that influenza does pose a health risk and the vaccine can mitigate that risk. If you are not part of a high-risk group your risk of contracting a fatal bout of influenza is very low. It is a personal choice that you have to make whether you feel it is an appropriate amount of risk to take and decide appropriately.
