Battling AIDS with mobile technology

Hello, I am a student in the University of Washington's Master's of Communication in Digital Media Program and I am working on a project that explores the implementation of cell phones as a combatant in the efforts against AIDS. Can anyone give me some specific information about how mass texting occurs, and who initiates these messages of awareness? Are there any other implementations besides mass texting, i.e. social media practices that have aided treatment and awareness? Any information would be extremely helpful!
