Hey Abby-

I felt the way you did a few years ago. I was raised to think that 'Arabs were smelly, worthless people who just want to rip you off." Pretty harsh stigmatization.

After the terrorist attacks on 9/11 (and perhaps you should check out a few other terrorist attacks that the US helped orchestrate on the same day some years past.. start with Chile), I too engaged in some subliminal bigotry for people who looked 'arab.' I think the first instance that really made me wake up, was when a friend of mine from Sri-Lanka was verbally attacked (called an Afghani) for being a 'terrorist.' She is a student... and was minding her own business, but as a result, was terrified to go back to the rail station, where it happened. She still lives with a bit of fear because of the incident. Indeed, I went through quite a change in realizing that not only are we all humans, but most of us share a lot of common experiences and culture, and can learn from one another. As a result, I have 3 very good friends from Yemen, brothers, and plan to study Arabic there in a year or so.

Abby- I wrote a poem as a reaction to a shirt I saw someone wear. It has direct relevance to what you are addressing. Take a look: http://www.jedimike.com/poetry/arab-brother.htm

Seems to be a small world after all.. Because somehow, everyone seems to know a lovely Arab person who has changed every Arab 'hate' belief they've ever had. One person represents all of them now? wow.. Well that is how they think of us. You may be intrested to know, Jerry Springer is broadcasted all over the world. What they see on that show, represents every American man and woman. The reason why your Arab friend is so nice to you, is because he/she is a forign exchange student, of course she likes America.. perhaps she could move here? Then! We could all be... diverse and happy, RIGHT?! Thats what you think dont you? Not everyone that lives in America feels the way you do, not everyone wants their enemies so close, close enough to attack- as it was on 9/11. We let our gaurd down, and look what happened.

Cheets, I seem to think that you just don't want to believe they may have actually been happy when they killed 2,000 Americans. You keep debating how you think that it was just a few of them and not all. It may not have been all, but you definetly wouldn't see American's cheering in our streets if we kill 2,000 Arabs, now would you. Their mentality is completly different from ours, they were pretty much raised to hate Americans. It's really sad that you stand up more for the people who comitted these murders more than the victims. Don't you see, they will do it again, and next time they will do something worse. The whole world was crying, and they were cheering.

I really don't try to make a habit of arguing with people but are you listening to what you are saying? I'm not justifying the actions of 9/11 both you and I know it was a tragedy. But every day since this "war on iraq" people have been killed everyday. The US had killed more than 2,000 people. Can't you for once step in someone elses shoes and imagine what it's like to have another Country try to take over your home. To kill thousands of people just to find one person? The fact of the matter is that no country should have to deal with the pain, the murder and the ignorance.

You seem very racist to me. How can you say that? I find it very ignorant of you to presume that all Arabic peoples view American in 'hate'? Do you have tunnel vision? Arabs aren't our enemies, it's people like you who have to always try to throw crap at the fan and rock the foundation of every person. We are all human. we all bleed red, we all have 2 eyes and a heart. Difference doesn't mean hate or destruction, igorance is hate. Ignorance is bliss. Maybe you should grow up and realize the damage your thoughts are doing.

I am really not interested in reading your posts. You don't seem very intellegent, yourself. You don't need to call names to get your point across... Just a tip.

Anyways, I don't care for anything you've got to say. BUT Just because we are all human means we all share a "love" for each other.. You couldn't be more wrong. It really makes me angry when people like you tell me I am the ignorant one for trying to express my opinion. Just think if you were one of the mothers, the daughters, the sons, the fathers.. ect who lost their family members in the 9/11 attacks.. Can you put yourself in THEIR shoes before you comment. How would you feel if they didn't pay for what they did.

The world will never love each other.. So I'd appreciate it if you all would get that out of their heads. There will always be people like me, there will always be people like YOU who have different viewpoints on issues such as "pay back".

You are quoting irrelevent info.. I seem racist? You're Canadian.. you didn't know what it was like to have your own country attacked.

Perhaps I just don't like those people? If that makes me a racist.. so be it, I would have absoulotly no problem killing every one of them. In my eyes.. they mean nothing. And.. we'd get the bonus of owning all that land that they have.. But I don't control the counrty.. nor do you smile

Why is that you have to throw in "You're Canadian"? Does my country of origin really make my opinion more or less important? of course not. And I would never wish to run a country because governing is a whole other complicated issue. I'm not trying to be mean or rude to you GoddessAbatha, I just think you should be a little more respectful with the terms and attitudes towards other cultures including Arabic peoples.

Messy, I have no reason to respect them.

The reason why I brought up that you are Canadian is that you don't know what it's like to have a "terror alert" going on.. You don't know what it's like to supposed to have been afraid to open your mail. Do you know who Tom Daschle is? He is the representitive for South Dakota. If you didn't know. South Dakota is where I am from. His offce is located not too many miles away from where I live. Do I think that you have reason to speak on the topic of 9/11? No, because you didn't experience it. You do have an opinion, and I respect that very much.

Adding to the respect of the Arabs topic. What have they done to respect ME? Obvisouly you think it is OKAY to kill over 2,000 innocent Americans, just like Cheets. Please don't try to justify it. Do you ever remember America doing anything NOT to show respect for Arab people until that happened? Because.. I don't.

Re: where is the love?

I will grant you the fact that yes my country, Canada, does not have a current "terror alert" going on. And it is true that I didn't witness 9/11 first hand. But I am educated enough to not assume that one person or 2 or even 5 people don't represent the culture or the country.

Please hear me out - You shouldn't have to fear anything Abatha, can't you see it's up to you to look past the CNN Headlines and realize that there is a world that is going on around us? The world is living after 9/11. I'm not justifying any of the deaths from the towers or am I justifying killing any of the innocent middle eastern citizens. Just because a few Arabs decided to crash into the WTC's doesn't mean that all wanted to, that doesn't mean that ALL Arabs see you with disrespect.

I guess what I am trying to say is maybe it would be beneficial for you not to fear the Arabic peoples. They aren't mean, they aren't disrespectful. Sure, will be a few but don't judge a culture based on a few people that you have been exposed to - Or base ideas on what you hear from other people.

I know you're a good person and I really do mean that. I just hope one day you'll find the courage inside of you to look beyond the barriers of Race and Language and treat others the way you'd like to be treated.

Sincerely,
Missa

ladies,

um, Goddess Abbatha - before embarking on a trictly "I'm right - your wrong" attitude - lets examine the problem - and don't just tell people you think their stupid - that is 3rd grade crap.

Again today I saw Paletinains mourning the loss of Saddam. I totally disagree with this sentiment - but why is it happening - what is the US doing to make them see us as evil?

Ultimately this war you are cheering will not succeed until we have inspired the hearts and minds of the arab world with the concepts of freedom and self-governance.

Does it feel to you as though they are getting the messege? Some are - but a large number in and outside of Iraq do not think of "freedom" and "democracy" when they see the American flag.

If the American flag does not inspire them toward freedom, this is a serious problem. Right now Arabs often feel frustraited and humiliated. We need to give them something to hope for - we need to give them an opportunity in such a way as it will be seized upon and made their own.

This is not just about democratizing Iraq - this is about inpiring this ideal to take root and inspire the arab world. We are not going to militarily destroy every dictatorship in the Arab world - all that will do is make them hate us more and more.

We need to encourage the Arabs to create democracy for themselves. They have young populations that can reshape the Arab culture.

The first step is beleiving in them - or they will never beleive it themselves.

Re: where is the love?

This discussion reminds of a really interesting article (in portuguese, by Stephan Kanitz) that I can't find right now :~/ Well, it talks about a resolution for everyone for the twentieth century: Respect one another.

To "love" everyone many times is too ambitious of a goal. How can you love the ones that have caused you harm? GodessAbatha can certainly testify that this can be too hard... To respect all is much more reasonable (still hard nonetheless...) But respecting others is trying to put yourself in the other's shoes and seeing that there perspectives are different, and consequently so are there actions.

I have met people who said they were satisfied with the 09/11 events. "Imperialist America" finally got what it deserved. But time passed, and soon children were born who would never get to meet their parents... The people I mentioned slowly started realizing that *actual* people had died, people who had families. And a very special thing called empathy kicked in and there perspective changed...

Respect, to me, is a lot about Empathy. It's about recognizing the humanity in other, and more importantly, it's about recognizing the humanity in ourselves.
