Child Abuse?

My sister taught English for the Peace Corps in Cape Verde. She said that sometimes the school used rods to hit disobedient children. She was appalled at first, but then accepted it as the norm because the students would not listen otherwise. I'm curious to see what others think... just because something is wrong in the U.S.A. should it be considered wrong elsewhere?

I think the kids need to be taught a different way of punishment. Physical punishment to kids should not be allowed anywhere. Just like it is considered child abuse in the U.S. it should be considered child abuse everywhere because that is the literal definition of it. There are other forms of punishment that can be just as successful and not physically hurt.

I don't think rods or rulers or any kind of physical punishment should be allowed. In India, many children have died because of such kinds of punishment. I think it is a form of child abuse bcause childen cannot retaliate. I remember being very afraid of being hit on my knuckles or knees if I didn't do my homework. And I'm sure every child was afraid too. Children need to be spared of the terror of punishment.

My sister said that was the only way they were punished at their homes. Threatening to kick them out of class or give them a failing grade never suceeded. Some just didn't care about school because some believed working for a living was more important. Can you think of any different ways to punish them? Thank you for all of your responses!

I don't think this is such a bad problem. Most people in Africa don't have enough money in the first place so I think that hitting them softly to excel the level of their education is okay.

I feel that children should not be physically or verbally abused to the extent that it internally or externally scars them. America is taking the wrong approach in dealing with child abuse. I feel that parents should punish their children in different ways besides abuse. Sitting your child down and talking with them, letting them know what they did wrong then going over the punishment is much more affective than abusing their kid.

I know how frustrating it can be when children in a class don't listen because when I was in high school, we had to occasionally teach students who were in primary school or kindergarten. Its only when you threaten them with a rod would they listen. But still I feel using a rod to actually hit a child isn't a very good thing. I'm sure when learning is more fun, children would listen. And when there is poverty or lack of food at home, children would naturally gravitate to the idea that earning is better than learning. Hitting them is like saying that if a child does not conform to certain rules which he does not like he needs to be punished. I would rather spare the rod because I feel its ok if kids don't listen in class, but its not a very nice sight to see a frightened child who has been hit with a rod. The problem with our schools is that all kids are expected to learn at one pace when each kid understands and learns at a different pace because of so many factors like the home environment, or understanding ability etc.

you have no right to lay your hands on anyone let alone a child, you see the physical pain may go in a few moments but the mental pain remains for life, abuse creates a shadow the length of a lifetime, bandaged can not heal all wounds, punishing a child with violence only enfources the cycle of abuse, when you hit a child it is done when you are angry right or wrong? Right, therefore you are teaching a child that violence is a way of releasing anger, violence solves nothing how many solders go to war and die because of violence before you lift your hands to anyone take a moment to think would you do this if you where NOT angry or frustrated.
