[Poll] Female Circumcision
September 26, 2009 - 04:43 PM

Last week in my anthropology class we were studying cultural relativism and ethnocentrism. For those of you who do not know, culture relativism is an approach one may take in studying other cultures, accepting that there culture is different and trying to understand the differences in why they do things the way they do. Ethnocentrism is an approach that resembles "I am right, and you are wrong" in terms of cultural activities.
One of the questions we were asked to think about is what approach would you take, ethnocentric or cultural relativist in issues of human rights, in particular, female circumcision.
So what does everyone think?
What approach would you take?
cultural relativist
(6 votes for 66.67%)
ethnocentric
(3 votes for 33.33%)
I don't know
(0 votes for 0%)

Thanks Ana for this post with a poll.
Female genital mutilation is an age-old practice, having its origin in Egypt and Africa. It's another form of humiliation of woman. It has been linked to the chastity of a woman and is a practice strengthened by superstition rather than any religious or scientific reasons.
Its prevalent even now all across the World. I consider it as a cultural relativistic practice because people of various cultures have always imitated one another in almost all superstitions and social evils, thinking it to be fashionable.

Thanks for your reply to my post/poll!
I too take a cultural relativist approach to this topic, because who can say that one person is right and another person is wrong in terms of cultural practices? I strive not to judge, but to listen and try to understand.

I think female circucision is widely practiced in Africa and people need to understand the culture of africans to be able to convince them(people who have been practicing this exercise from birth) why this practice should be abandon than to criticise them and make them look inferior.

Dear Snarteh! When we codemn female circumcision, the ignorant practice is being targeted not the communities practising it. It has been prcaticed in various forms all across the world, citing fertlity enhancement, chastity, etc. So, Africans are just a part of the larger practitioners.
People like you can form teams & promote awareness campaigns against such malpractices and do good for the mother class.

I highly agree with you Siddq, that is why we who are not ignorant to this folish practice should be able to do far more than writing bueatiful analysis on internet and get to work by going to our people who are continuing to perpetuate harm to our young mothers to desist from this ugly situation.

Brother Snarteh! As my mother tells me, as a child, I learnt to walk before talking. Writing analyses on the internet is only for sharing my knowledge or experience with others not as time pass or loose advice mongering. As long as I live, my family, friends and local community would not indulge in such mutilation and humiliation of the would-be mothers. Anyhow in India, such a practice has not seen light so far.

No No NO. It is definitely wrong to practice female circumcision, especially on babies who cannot speak for themselves.
This abhorrent behavior is never, ever right and should be stamped out wherever it is happening.
It is easy to take a cultural relativist approach when it is not your vagina being mutilated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jo Devizes knows a womens website that is rather good.

I am mortified by this practice's occurence in today's society. Some argue that is a cultural custom and tradition, but when it is no in the interest of those its performed on its not ok. These girls don't have a say!!
WHO clearly has stated that people are NOT to perform FGM under any circumstances, and they are the big world's directional influence with health. Also this act is a violation of the covenant of human rights for women and for the child.
!!!
Any thoughts?

Even if I understand that it is part of tradition, I still find Female Circumcision to be cruel because as someone mentionned, women don't have much to say about it. It is often performed in bad conditions which can be really dangerous to the woman. There are also cases where women caught diseases because of the instruments used, it is a very painful procedure too and I do believe that it has a psychological impact on the person.
