What must be the objective of education?
September 18, 2009 - 10:38 PM

We often tend to discuss 'How a School should be?, 'what is good parenting?' etc. In the current scenario of technological advances, has the basic objective of education lost or is it losing its essence?

Let us come to a consensus on what must be the objective of education. It will answer many a questions which quite often hunt our mind.

There are many different ways of learning; teaching is only one of them. We learn a great deal on our own, in independent study or play. We learn a great deal interacting with others informally -- sharing what we are learning with others and vice versa. We learn a great deal by doing, through trial and error. Long before there were schools as we know them, there was apprenticeship -- learning how to do something by trying it under the guidance of one who knows how. For example, one can learn more architecture by having to design and build one's own house than by taking any number of courses on the subject.

In the educational process, students should be offered a wide variety of ways to learn, among which they could choose or with which they could experiment. They do not have to learn different things the same way. They should learn at a very early stage of "schooling" that learning how to learn is largely their responsibility -- with the help they seek but that is not imposed on them.

I think collective responsibilities from all sides including pupils, students, parents/guidiance, teachers/lecturers and other stakeholders.
if this is lacking, then no matter the technological development in the world today, educational objectives will never be achieve.

I would label education as that which shapes the character of students and provides higher education. Education should primarily prepare students in the real world after they graduate. The problem with education nowadays is that everybody simply focus on getting high grades and get lots of awards by any means necessary, but what these school forget is that they should shape the character and personality of these students that will allow them to function in society as able citizens.

Also, education as higher learning applies to adults looking to further their careers in their respective businesses. Education such as interior design courses, online management schools, and crash courses in business administration apply to this objective.

I think the objective of education should be to create a sense of wonder about the world, to instill a desire to learn in individuals. In this way it does not only apply to youth or others who are directly involved in an educational system, instead it helps to create an atmosphere that will permeate everyday life. Since education needs to be an ongoing process I feel like this should be the most pressing goal.
Now the big question I would like to ask is how can this be done?

The purpose of a learning objective is to communicate. Therefore, a well-constructed learning objective should leave little room for doubt about what is intended. A well constructed learning objective describes an intended learning outcome and contains three parts, each of which alone means nothing, but when combined into a sentence or two, communicates the conditions under which the behavior is performed, a verb that defines the behavior itself, and the degree (criteria) to which a student must perform the behavior. If any one of these three components is missing, the objective cannot communicate accurately.

In concrete terms, the purpose of an education should be to prepare students for jobs that they will take when they enter the real world, ones that they can choose and ones that will put food on the table. Every child needs a solid background in reading, writing, math, etc., and teachers should try their best to foster a desire for learning in their students, but it is really most important that a student is empowered to pick and choose which job they want; this could include pursuing a college degree or a technical education. They should be familiar with their strengths and weaknesses and learn how to use those to their advantage in the years following school. While there should be minimum standards for what all children are required learn, education should ultimately lead to better self-awareness and a clear-cut path for success in the real world, in whatever form it takes for each person.

The objective of education should first always be to inspire students, be it inspire them to be better students or better people. Learning can only come when a student is excited about what they are learning or how they are learning. The most successful students are those who have been inspired to become excited about what they are doing.

With the rise of technology, the growing emphasis on standardized test scores, and even the economic recession and outsourcing of jobs, education has reached a new level of competition. In some countries, like France, you need at least two years of a university education to apply for a menial job, such as the checkout person at a grocery store. In China and India, a very large amount of students are competing for a small amount of jobs. I find this unfortunate, because when you read about the people who founded Universities in the states (and I am thinking of Jefferson and the University of Virginia in saying this), they built the schools so that people would pursue what they love. Now, it feels as though that passion, that thirst for knowledge just to have it, is slowly leaking out of our society. I'm not sure how, but I think it is time to shift the focus back to love of learning. People should learn to read so they can find books that interest them; so that they can pursue their own subject of interest. I wholeheartedly believe in a liberal arts education, because it exposes a student to any and all possible subjects, expanding their palates until they find their preferred taste.

LuLu, I think you make a very good point. As the world becomes a more competitive place, education has become something you have to do not something you necessarily love to do. Especially in the U.S. learning has shifted from fostering innovation and critical thinking to teaching students how to do well on standardized tests. While setting a benchmark seems like a good idea to create a standard of learning, the cost is the loss of passion for learning. As the globalization continues the individual will gain more and more power. Those who can learn and adapt are going to be the ones who thrive. The question then is how can a balance be found between maintaining a competitive educational system while instilling the passion to learn more in students?

smileI think the objective of education should be to teach and prepare the youth to be the future leaders and professionals in the future. Education should also prepare the youth as to what to expect in the real world. Not just formulas and bunch of others that they may or may not use in the future.
