Private media's work in the process of Elections
August 28, 2009 - 03:27 PM

Afghanistan currently has seen major growth in televised medium outlets with broadcasts spread across different parts of the country. It includes three main private outlets having an almost global reach. These main drivers of media information have done an altogether successful job in the running of the elections for this current year.

Necessary to spread of information or freedom to do so, especially in the most imperative civil-rights based function, the elections, the role of media is something that can provide such rights. Given the extent of ruins in the media infrastructure and more clearly the lack of it, Afghanistan within a period of 8 years after rebirth has by great efforts provided its citizens with awareness, information, transparency, and the will to raise some degree of debate among its citizens.

The most visible tool Radio, then television, web blogs, newspapers, magazines have contributed greatly until now.
We've had 24 hour broadcast on live televised interviews, debates, discussions from top political leaders and responsibile bodies for the election. And not to mention, before elections for the first time in history, the Presidential debate took place twice among the most prominent presidential candidates including Mr. Karzai himself.

For sure it will put minds into working for a better tomorrow. We're moving forward.

So long as your media can stay independent then it is good. When it comes to the run up to an election, every party should be given equal opportunity to broadcast. Sadly this is not done, even in the UK where only the big 3 parties ever get the same access.

It is when the Government starts to close down TV and radio stations and news papers that you need to get worried.
