Can gun control laws prevent gun violence perpetrated by youth?

Admist the number of solutions proposed to prevent gun violence perpetrated by youth, one solution i.e. stronger gun control laws, receives unprecedented attention. Those in support of stronger gun control laws argue that eliminating the means through which violence occurs reduces the probability of instigating violence.
However, this solution also has many critics. Critics argue that gun is only one medium of through which youth instigate violence. Moreover, the gun control solution has been criticized for focusing on the means through which violence is inflicted rather than on reasons for resorting to violence.
When youth gun violence was on the rise in the U.S. in the 1980s and 1990s, among the gun control approaches to violence prevention was the “Soft” Legal Control approach. This approach emphasized on the non-arrest methods and community driven efforts to reduce youth gun crime. Juvenile courts adopted a therapeutic, rather than a punitive, approach to encouraging youth gun offenders to discard their weapons.
What are your thoughts on the debate of how to prevent gun violence perpetrated by youth? Can the stronger gun control laws solution reduce youth gun crime? Should it be accompanied with an approach such as the “Soft” Legal approach?

a mixture of both approaches is best. On one hand, through proper counselling and the establishment of services to provide jobs or other mediums of hope will no doubt have a strong effect but the overall problem will persist. The gun control system stems or reduces further growth of gun crimes among youths and the therapeutic counselling approach gives them more options other life jail or death.
As much as we'd want it, not every one is willing to change there lifestyles, not everyone can be saved, we work hard to save all we can and whoever refuses to change will have to face those tougher gun control laws and the full force of the law --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- !xotîz

It seems to me that the tougher these laws become, the more violence caused by guns is in our midst. Our governments have put laws in place making it more difficult to obtain a license for owning a gun. This simply creates more hassle for those who use guns for hunting and other such purposes. What we seem to be forgetting is that people are almost never killed by a licensed and registered gun. It is people in the streets who have illegal guns, who are advocating this violence, and it is these people who we need to crack down on. Often these guns are stolen, and more often, illegally imported.
I don't think that the law alone can eliminate gun violence, although the laws are quite obviously necessary in order to punish those who are caught perpetrating gun violence. The real problem we need t get to the bottom of, is WHY youth are using guns and other forms of violence. Is it their home life? Do the feel threatened and unsafe in their town? Is it simply what thy have grown accustomed to?
When picturing gun violence, most of us will picture drug dealers and misled youth in large cities. If this is the case, we need to focus on keeping these kids off of the streets, starting at an early age. I feel that is there were activities and hobbies these kids could participate in, they may be less likely to turn to violence, gangs, drug rings, etc.

hmm, true, down here the lowest crimes rates come during sporting seasons like international cricket or world cup where or country is performing and everyone is watching. This is a good indicator that if we can find ways to occupy their times, things can get better. Also, i agree that tackling the root of the problem will bear great fruit. The main cause for violence for many places is overpopulation and a low literacy rate. These factors together leads to jobless youths which will eventually lead to crime(in most cases). We need to step up birth control methods so limit the amount of children to stem overpopulation and ensure that all who leave the education system are literate and capable of work. Who cannot, well farming, military, trades(electrician, masonry) technical things like that. I guess the government needs to take a closer more personal look at the situation and evaluate the dead source and address them...... Just as you said. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- !xotîz

NO. Gun control will do nothing but influence man's natural way of rebelion. and increase the crime rate and it won't stop it.
