Niger-Delta, Nigeria: Amnesty to the Militants
August 12, 2009 - 10:40 AM

The recent events in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria have called for serious security concern locally and internationally. This is because it is taking toll on the economic and social life of the Nation.

In an effort to address the matter, the government has declared Amnesty to the militants who are willing to lay down their arms. Also the government made a monetary commitment attached to the amnesty. This particular commitment has created mixed reactions across the country as to the genuiness of the program and its sincerity. The major militant group (MEND) is against this provision, adding that it negates the objective of the entire amnesty, thus rejecting the programme.

Do you think the provision of monetary commitment to the amnesty is a good development? Will it assist in realising the objective of the amnesty or will it work against it. Please let me know your opinion. Thank you.
