Japanese Dolphin Industry: The Cove

There is a documentary recently released called The Cove exposing Japan's Dolphin industry. It is very controversial in Japan, as the industry has been kept under wraps by the government there. http://thecovemovie.com/

I recently read up on this issue. The Japenese originially hunted dolphins to provide their meat for the people, but soon it turned into a "form of pest control". The dolphins are eating too much fish, and not leaving enough for the fishers.
It's disturbing to me that the dolphin hunters are killing off a delicate species for their own gain when over-fishing is already a big enough problem.

All those that I know in Japan (my penpal, I'm a second year Japanese language student) as well as those that are in Canada for temporary work have never ever heard of the problem, which to me is very concerning, because unless the people know about it the issue won't be exposed, but this isn't the first time Japan has been deceptive...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre_controversy_and_denial#Denial_of_massacre_by_Japanese_veterans

If you all want to know more about this and get a really in-depth idea of what is actually going on, rent the movie The Cove and actually watch it. First of all, in response to Emily, the Japanese have not just killed dolphins for the main purpose of feeding their people in a very long time. You're right that they believe that it is in order to stop the dolphins from eating all their fish, but the dolphins are eating the same amount of fish that they have always eaten. This has only recently become a problem because the Japanese have overfished and their fish stocks are almost depleted. They are also selling the dolphin meat to make up for what they lose in terms of money made from fish.
In response to Mike, you are right that no one seems to be aware of this problem, which is definitely something that needs to change.
The Japanese government is the one encouraging the fishermen's thoughts that the dolphins are over eating and that overfishing is not the problem. They are also the ones allowing dolphin meat to be mislabeled and sold as much more expensive, and far less toxic, whale meat. They are also hiding the fact that the dolphin meat being sold from Taiji and other places are extremely toxic due to mercury from the environment, with over 2000ppm within the meat (safe limit is 0.4ppm).
Please watch the movie and get this out to your community and help to support change.
