old aged homes and elderly, what do you think?
July 26, 2009 - 07:55 PM

There are old aged homes established to provide food and shelter for the elderly. Such homes are the only support for elderly citizens who do not have anyone to look after them, and even for those who have been ignored by their families.Do you think such old aged homes are a solution to take care of the elderly? What other options do you think are there to take care of elderly members of your family?

The establishment of homes for the elderly can also be observed here in the Philippines. However, only a small percentage avails of this service. This maybe because of our culture that gives great importance to family, not only the immediate but as well as the extended members.

Nevertheless, to contribute to the discussion, some services that are given to the concerned generation either for discount or free are:
1. transportation fees
2. cinema
3. health benefits

Thank you and God blesssmile

the old aged homes can't be the solution of the elderly people who have no one to take care,or those ignored by their families.if we wanna do more to prfent this we have to stop those who r cuting the un born babies.every year they kill millions of unborn babies.please stop.its very graphic.

In the west, the family units are breaking down so that old people may not the support they once had.

Other parts of the world tend to look after their old folks although some treat widowed women abominably. This is changing and there old peoples homes where once there weren't any.

That said, they must be of the highest standards, where the people are treated with dignity and respect.
Sadly many in the UK do not do this and the people are just left to fade away and die.

The continuity of the discussion spurned me to research more about specific actions observed in our country and found a Republic Act created solely for this sector in the society. Hope you find this valuable.

Republic Act No. 9257:"Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003

you can try to reseach on this - http://www.ops.gov.ph/records/ra_no9257.htm
August 24, 2009
(moderator, i hope i didn't violated any rules)

To summarize, its aims are the ff:

1. establish mechanism whereby the contribution of the senior citizens are maximized;
2. adopt measures whereby our senior citizens are assisted and appreciated by the community as a whole;
3. establish a program beneficial to the senior citizens, their families and the rest of the community that they serve; and
4. establish community-based health and rehabilitation programs in every political unit of society."

But to answer the discussion specifically, our lawmakers have identified some privileges for our senior citizens (60 yrs. old and above)

1. exemption from the payment of individual taxes
2. free medical and dental services subject to the guideline issued by Department of Health
3. 20% discount in fare for domestic air, sea travel and land transpo.
4. educational assistance provided they shall meet min. requirement
5. exemption from training fees for socioeconomic programs
6. 20% disc. from all establishments rel. to the utilization of services in hotels and similar lodging establishment (inc. funeral and burial services)
7. min. of 20% disc. on admission fees charged by cinemas, concert halls, and other similar establishments

(some I, haven't posted)

How about in your country?

Old age is quite similar to childhood in many respects. The way a child or a baby is unable to do any work on his/her own and is dependent on their parents every now and then, an old person is also dependent on another person for getting their work accomplished as they are no longer physically fit. But here one should notice the irony. These old people are the same who took care of their children when were small. They did so willingly, without any complaint. They never considered their children as a burden.
