Nuclear Weapons: Global Zero is Coming
July 7, 2009 - 12:02 PM

A nuclear weapons proliferation crisis is rapidly building in North Korea, Iran and beyond.

But out of the spotlight, Global Zero, a new alliance of prominent diplomats, military and civic leaders, is beginning to persuade the nuclear powers that there is only one answer to solve this crisis: the elimination of all nuclear weapons.

The question is:Is it possible to eliminate Nuclear Weapons in the World?

I think that Global Zero is a good idea for at least bringing the goal of zero nuclear weapons to the table. Before the creation of this group, reaching a nuclear zero has been something merely talked about in academic and news articles as a "theory" instead of a real possibility. Global Zero seems to be an important first step in making it a reality. Of course, we cannot tell for sure at this time whether the body will actually function likes its intended, but I think it is vast improvement from what the world had before.

Nevertheless, this group is just the first step. An article by Ivo Daalder and Jan Lodal in Foreign Affairs last November entitled "The Logic of Zero" convinced me that reaching zero just might me possible. The authors make a strong argument that if done correctly, nuclear zero could become a reality.

I definitely think that it's possible to eliminate nuclear weapons from our world. Think about it, its currently 2009 and the Cold War is long gone.

Which is why I can't comprehend why we need nuclear weapons at all? The potential for destruction of a nuclear weapon is far to great a number to even envision.

I think that we can all collectively affect the possible removal of nuclear weapons from our planet by adopting a similar attitude towards the removal and termination of the proliferation of such arsenals.

I'm very curious about free nuclear weapons in our society.Last April, President Obama and Medvedev of Russia said they were committed to a world free of nuclear weapons. But it will require a massive concerted effort to press them to turn rhetoric into action. What do you think?

Its great to know that they [Obama and Mevdev] are committed to the goal, but I think its definitely going to take a more collective and unanimous push from powerful nations to get countries like North Korea from developing their nuclear arsenals. Turning this rhetoric into practicality might be a while coming, I predict.

What I mean to say is that, at the moment, I think that the threat of nuclear doom is somewhere near the bottom of a to-do list. Im hoping to not pound you over the head with this perennial term, but I definitely think that the " global economic recession" is more of an immediate concern to leaders like Obama and Mevdev, which is why Im assuming it'll take them both a while before we as the global public, see any concrete differences.

Hope that reply wasn't too cookie-cutter for you.smile

Highly articulated...The effect of a detonated nuclear war head are three fold: extermination of life, alteration of the earth's climate and ecosystem and instates fear and distrust amongst nations and peoples, which only leads for the stronger and manic desire to acquire such weapons as a deterrent in the capacity of first strike or second strike capabilities by such nations as was observed in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Japan) during world war II, August 1945.

What do you think can encourage governments to stay away from, or do away with nuclear weapons?

Just wondering!

Hubert H. Humphrey, a former Vice President of the United States once said "For the first time in the history of mankind, one generation literally has the power to destroy the past, the present and the future, the power to bring time to an end". The reality of this statement is the fear of our vulnerability and existence at the behest of those who possess these weapons.

As the spread of the weapons by pariah states and rogue elements continue unabated, soon there will be sufficient nukes to wipe out all life upon our planet. How do we as young people with a vital voice reverse this trend? Friends, please join this debate and suggest the possible way forward to ensuring a complete reverse of this malicious trend...

One of the best ways that youth today can influence the future of nuclear weapons is through the the renegotiating of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The NPT comes up for review in 2010, which is an opportunity to voice the global concerns about nuclear weapons. Youth and youth organizations around the world need to express their wishes that the NPT re-negotiation results in dramatic decreases in the amount of weapons that the U.S. and Russia are allowed to have. In addition to stronger safeguards by all countries to prevent more nuclear weapons from being created and given to "rogue states," this move to de-nuclearize would be a signal to all countries around the world that the U.S. and Russia are serious about eliminating nuclear weapons.

I actually didnt know that NPT was going to come up for review in 2010. (Thanks for the info!)

I really hope that this time around, an actual plan is erected that'll allow for de-nuclearization. I think as I mentioned before, national leaders consistently dictate that they are "committed to seeing a decrease in nuclear arsenals" But this statement is rarely backed up with a follow up.

I hope that with the recent switch up of leaders from the two nations credited for the proliferation of nuclear arsenals (Medvedev,Obama), The next NPT review will actually yield some practical results.

Of course it is possible. We have no need of it and the only reason that NK and Iran have developed nuclear armaments is because the United states alone has enough nuclear power in their arsenal to bake our world to a crisp. Removing ALL nukes from the world is the only way to ensure the survival of our species and the first step to a world without war. And isn't that what we all, since we were young, dreamed about?

Do you think that a complete disarmament by the US, UK, Pakistan, France, Russia, China and India encourage North Korea to disarm and Iran to discontinue with its nukes development program?

Stephen

Not sure if you did so on purpose but you managed to not put the illigal occupying entity that is Israel from your list of Neuclear powers or does the 200 or so Nukes they have in DIMONA not count?

And one must correct you, not once did Iran say its creating a neuclear weapon, its neuclear facilities are purely for energy such as France and soon in Britain they have neuclear power stations why not Iran, you merely place Iran on such a list because the Big bully that is the USA and the Zionist Entity state they think Iran has Neuclear weapons.

May I suggest you tell us were are the WMDs that Iraq apparently had before the USA and UK bombed half the country and killed in excess of 1.2 million people (Red cross/amnesty int) Now we are trying to head with a confrontation with a Nation like Iran that has in excess of 2 million full time military personel and 20 million reservicest freathing a Nation with Brute force will only spur such nation into a avenue wereby a peaceful neuclear facility will be turned into a military one.

Lastly may I also state that you read the last few interviews with HANS BLIX about Iran whom he states does not have any form of evidence that thier Neurclear reactors are for military but they are designed in such a way that they could only be feasable for energy reactors.
