Promoting your Website through Twitter Promotion

Twitter marketing is becoming more and more popular these days.
Search engine optimization focuses on those users who are searching for your business services/products online on Google, Yahoo and various other search engines.
On the other hand Twitter allows you to share your thoughts with other users belonging to the same "Business Categories" such as Travel, Web Design, Web Promotion and several others.
I would like to know if any of you is using Twitter more than Google to promote their website.

I haven't heard of marketing through Twitter, but I would suspect that you would reach fewer people with more concentrated interests using Twitter.
While search engines seem to be widely used (at least, around me), I think Twitter has yet to reach such a wide audience.
Or maybe I'm simply surrounded largely by non-Twitter, Google users.

Never heard of Twitter until a few months ago in school, but now it's everywhere and growing fast. The "Twitter army of the misinformed" as I've heard it called. Seems accurate enough, from what I know of it, which isn't much. Never been there myself.

I've been a user of Twitter for maybe three months now and I do agree that it is a great way to quickly promote your business, ideas, events, etc with ease.
The aspect of Twitter I think that people admire the most is the fact that you don't need fancy HTML/CSS coding to make your page look appealing, and that you don't need to put up a lot extra/personal information about yourself.

So, maybe I am simply surrounded largely by non-Twitter, Google users. Hmm.
I guess I'm skeptical as there's so much media hype around Twitter. Still, I recently saw somewhere (can't remember where) that Twitter is now the 5th or 6th most popular social networking site. Not a verified statistic and I'm unsure how "most popular" is measured.
But I agree: it's indisputable how pervasive Twitter has become among online socialites and - arguably - social media, in general.
Has anyone here had experience promoting a site through Twitter?

I tend to agree that Twitter is a wonderful tool for self promotion. Less than 10 years ago, companies would have had to hand over large sums of money to reach people.
While you can hardly turn on the news, open a paper, or browse the internet without hearing about the tweeting phenomenon, you have to question; who is paying attention?
A recent article cited that only 4.4% of Twitter's visitors are under 18.
I would recommend to anyone who is looking to expand their business by tapping into the vast resources of social networking to first examine which age demographic they are intending to target, prior to devoting themselves to a particular service.

Site promotion through Twitter?
It can be done, although I believe the audience you will reach will be small (this will be true if you have few followers) and thus, will be ineffective.
There are always the tested-and-proven methods of promotion, like ads, placing links in your message board signature, or using Facebook (place the link and post it in your Wall).
But since Twitter is growing phenomenally, we expect a huge rate of Twitter "embracement". Probably, in a few months...we may never know exactly how.

There are two important things in Twitter - number of followers and quality of your tweets. If you are providing good, informational tweets, then your followers will increase over time. Further, use your tweets to drive traffic to your site.
