I don't think eating less meat will balance the environment because the animals which are being eaten are made for eating only and if we reject meat the environmental ecosystem will be dragged down rather than to improve, so don't go like this....... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- sun-e-boy (सूर्य)

This is not quite right. Animals used for food, eat a lot of food! I forgot the exact statistic, but a cow eats far more calories than we get back in T-bone steaks. Plus, those cows generate a lot of methane gas which is a real killer global warming gas, far more potent than regular CO2. It has been estimated that the damage to the climate caused by cows is far worse than the damage caused by all modes of transportation on Earth put together!
Of course, most meat consumed is from chickens, pigs, sheep and maybe goats (ignoring fish for the moment). But the idea to eat less meat is very environmentally correct!

I don't think not eating meat will help the environment in anyway, we eat meat because we need it, and other animals do as well, it's not like we go around eating cats or tigers or anything like that.

Eating less meat does not necessarily means protecting the environment. We can eat a lot of domestic animal meat and still the environment will be fine and even better.
The reason why i say this is because the more the number of animals we grace at home, the poor the environment in a way that the trampling effect of the many numbers of animals cause the soil to wear and the grasses to go off. Some other animals also destroy the plants and the trees that we grow leading to poor climate and soil hence deteriorating the environment.
Please eat more meat as possible to avoid this phenomenon.

I limit the amount of meat that I eat.
Eating meat does not ALWAYS affect the environment negatively.
Say, for instance, in remote areas far away from markets and agricultural centers. For these people, hunting and eating meat may in fact be less harmful for the environment than going vegetarian. Shipping foods (such as vegetables, grains and other vegetarian staples) to these regions increase the amount of emissions going into the environment. Thus hunting and eating meat in this instance may be better for the environment; as long as good conservation practices are used. Another instance may be in areas where overpopulation of certain native animal populations are causing environmental degradation and decreases in biodiversity. Culling animals in such cases may be beneficial to the environment and is one of the top issues in wildlife management.
The big problem is factory farming practices which are very harmful to the environment. As stated earlier they do create large amounts of pollution to water, air and land. And they use a lot of resources (such as soy and wheat) that could be used for feeding a greater number of people. Much of the nutrition value is lost when staples such as soy and wheat are fed to animals. Thus by eating the soy and wheat directly, more people worldwide can be fed. These are only some of the reasons to avoid eating meat. Others include religious and ethical reasons.

this site gives good arguments for both sides of the debate. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When the going gets tough, the tough get going -Billy Oceans

I don't eat a lot of meat as it is due to allergies, but by no means am I vegetarian. I live on a farm with my parents, and we make most of our own foods and don't spend as much time or money in the grocery store.
I believe that factory farming is a huge issue. Factory farming is another serious form of animal cruelty. Cows, chickens, and pigs are raised in confinement with almost no room to turn around in. They recieve little or no light when farmers began adding vitamins A & D to replace sunlight. Diseases are spread rapidly, so the farmers administered antibiotics to the animals which left toxic residue in animal tissue and now salmonella poisoning is becoming an increasing problem among consumors. Other chemicals that are also potentially harmful to us are being fed to the animals. So not only is factory farming animal cruelty, but harmful to people as well.
I do encourage people to eat less meat because of the issues that factory farmers raise.
