How could you help someone who doesn’t believe they have a substance abuse problem?

Hi Melissa,
I see from the number of different posts you may be worried about a friend or loved one.
Which substance is being abused?
Are you sure it is being abused or is it just being used and you do not approve?
If their actions are impeding in normal daily life then it is probably abuse. If you need to discuss this with them, do not do it while they are 'high'. You need to talk to them when they have come down and try to speak about how it is affecting them and their friends. Do not be judgmental as this will drive them away. Try to see if they do not like to feel how they do when they come down and maybe they would like to get some help.
Be gentle and loving not forceful and overbearing.
Check out a help line for what ever substance they are abusing, they will have a lot of information for you to use. Keep this handy as if you can get the person to agree to help, you have the phone number to hand and can dial it straight away whilst they are in a receptive mood.
Good luck Melissa --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jo Devizes knows a womens website that is rather good.
