I liked so much your post. I think that every person has to value your country, your culture...
I am Brazilian and i love my country. We also have to know different countries, cultures, religions, to understand some acts and to live in peace with everybody and with ourselves.

I couldn't agree with you more. People should never forget thier roots. Our roots are the one thing we can always fall back when and if we ever need to rediscover ourselves.

i'm going to make the mistake of voicing my opinion and possibly being flamed by nigerians everywhere.

i am nigerian and while i do stay in touch with my roots, and i do go back annually, i can't help but be sorely dissappointed each time. how can i stay true to a country where whenever i go people are either trying to harm me, steal from me, or scam me? i'm not sure how many other nigerians experience this, however because it is quite evident at the airport in kano or abuja that i am a "foreigner" people are always trying to take advantage of me. excuse me, i'm canadian, not stupid.
with anything i do or achieve, i will emphasis my name, my efforts, and those who have helped me realize my potential, my close friends, and family. if anyone of those happens to be nigerian, then that's great, but i'm not going to go to great lengths
mind you, i do have pride for my culture, religion, family, etc. i just hate what nigeria is becoming as a result of all the corruption and poverty.

Dear Layusa,

I have struggled much with the same thing you are talking about. I am an American citizen now living in the US, but I see my country from an outside perspective, since I was born and raised in many different countries. I went to uni. in the US, and in school many people accused me of being unpatriotic, delusional, ungrateful and having an identity crisis. This hurt me and made me question who I am and how I can appreciate a country when I see so many bad things about it. I am still on the journey but have come to a few conclusions.

I believe that the best way to be "patriotic" is to pray and work for change for my people. I must claim the sins of our past; I must know about and repent for the evil things my forefathers have done. I cannot justify past actions such as slavery, Japanese concentration camps, complicity with genocide and dictators or Jim Crow by saying "I am not responsible." I must look for those prejudices in my own heart and work to destroy them first in myself, then in my country, then in the world. I must be humble. This is the way to truly love my country.

I hope this helps. On the journey with you, clarita

PS. I think it's also important that we search our history and look for things that do make our nation great. Every country has some great moments in their history, a few moments where the light of eternity shines through the darkness of the world. Do you know of any Nigerian heroes, whether they are famous or not? I have some Nigerian friends who I greatly admire - they are heroes to me. Chinua Achebe, a great writer, is Nigerian. What has Nigeria contributed to the world? I bet there are a lot of interesting things you can find out!

We must not be afraid to look honestly at both the good and the bad things in ourselves and in our people.

i understand and i agree. i read nigerian literature and think that nigerian art can be very meaningful. i am not saying that nigeria has nothing to offer. and i know it would be best to help change things, but i'm not exactly sure how that can happen. i don't know how i could do anything personally to change the fact that even some of my own family attempts to swindle me out of my possessions. my parents are very active in the nigerian scene. my dad is actually trying to be a politician there and has set up his own democratic party. my parents donate a lot of money to combat poverty and encourage medicine in the country, and yet i still feel as if they haven't made a dent.

the people of the country need to be changed first. once again, not saying that there is something wrong with the people, however there is a certain mentality that could be worked on.
