I support that our government should spend more money on research on how to maximize our abundant sunlight into power. It is cheaper and cleaner. If we could power our cars, machines, phones, television by sunlight, don't you think life will be better than the current fears of global warming?

You have absolute idea. The use of natural energy enhance the development of the world as a whole and conserve the nature in the other hand. All the countries should hear this for the betterment. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- sun-e-boy (सूर्य)

Aren't nuclear energy or coal ok sources? Yet our government ignores those for the most part. There is waaaay too much politics in government to really depend on them. It comes down to people and organizations to make governments change. Politicians have agendas that do not always fall in line with what is best and right for their citizens.I read one city in Arizona received hundreds of thousands dollars per the American bailout to install solar panels that will save $10,000-20,000 per year in electricity. Sounds good, right. It will take the city about 25 years to break even on the money given (by taxpayers) away. A good use of the money? Hardly debatable. In that time frame the panels may become obsolete, quit working or there may be better technology by then. It's hard to trust politicians when I see that sort of wasteful spending.

I certainly think that both: 1) alternative renewable energies are going to become a necessity eventually if we want to continue to have the quality of life that we enjoy in the more developed countries and 2) alternative renewable energies have the potential to meet all our energy needs.
However, what I see taking place is that hardly any funds are allocated to alternative energy R&D (Research and development). I completely agree with the above sentiment that alternative energy is incredibly expensive at the moment, and by the time it pays itself off, it is often obsolete. What we need is more investment in the technology, and more companies competing with each other to provide better and cheaper alternative energy.
This is the case because alternative energies have to compete with other energy forms which, although may be dirtier, they are cheaper, and they provide the same function. Until, in my opinion, two things happen: 1) government institutes regulations to make consumers pay to offset the cost of the CO2 currently being emitted from dirty energy sources and 2) investors are encouraged to invest their money in R&D of alternative renewable energies
I urge you to check out this short video of Thomas Freidman, author of "Hot, Flat, and Crowded" as he discusses this very problem. I encourage you to watch section 18, if you watch nothing else.

Green energy is the only future our race has. It is widely known that fossil fuels (oil, gas, etc.) are limtied to a certain amount, and that limit has almost been reached. So the future must be different, our power source is bound to change sooner or later. We all hope for the sooner. But what should it change to? We have already researched into hydropower and have discovered that it causes ecological disruption. Wind power is a suitable replacement but medical studies seem to have put a damper on it. We have geothermal, but that is limited to certain regions. Then there are tides which seem like a great idea, but have not been tested thouroughly yet. That leaves us with solar power. it is most abundant, safe, and reliable. It seems that solar energy is becoming more and more common because it is accessible to everyone, everywhere. And, it is limitless.

I definitely agree that there is a vast potential for solar energy use. Currently it is enjoying great success on small scales; such as for powering private homes and small businesses. However, there needs to be some more technological breakthroughs before it can be made into an alternative on the large scale. One of the current problems is that it takes a vast amount of surface area in order to generate a substantial amount of power. Also there are problems with storage and transportation of energy. In some places, like cities that enjoy plenty of regular sunny days, there are already alot of flat exposed surfaces (roofs) that are not being used for any other purpose. In this case, solar is a great energy supplement. Another place with vast potential for developing solar energy plants are in the great deserts of the world. For example, the sahara desert enjoys plenty of regular sunshine, and the land is unproductive for most other activities, making it a great candidate for a solar energy plant.
However, solar energy is not a silver bullet solution. Locations that enjoy long days in the summer and very short days in the winter would not be able to rely on solar power for half the year and would thus have to find alternatives. I'm a great supporter of wind power, and I think that if wind generators (which take up little space on productive land and can thus be combined with agricultural activities for example) and solar collectors on roof tops and other unproductive sites could be a good answer.
