As published in the Weekly Green issue of October 27, 2008.
In May 2009, a new hotel, the Songjiang Hotel, will be erected near Shanghai, China. Any other hotel could have easily gone unnoticed, but not this one. Indeed, built on an abandoned quarry, the Songjiang Hotel will benefit from a very special architectural design inspired by the water and the natural surrounding landscape. Designed by Atkins, a renowned international architectural firm, this hotel complex will be comprised of 400 rooms and stand two floors taller than the 100 meter rocky facade, in addition to having an underwater zone. It will also contain conference installations which have a capacity 1000 guests, a banquet hall, restaurants, coffee shops, cafés and sports facilities. Two underwater levels of the hotel will have two floors that contain a restaurant and guestrooms that face a 10m tall aquarium. The lowest floor will consist of a recreation room containing a pool and an aquatic sports area. An extreme sports centre for activities such as rock climbing and bungee jumping will also be present.
To end the article on a green note, it must be said that the Songjiang Hotel is a building that embraces sustainable development thanks to its design that goes from a green roof to a geothermal energy extraction system. If you’re ever going to visit China, a tour at the hotel is a must!
