Priti Gros' article in the Weekly Green issue of November 17, 2008
Eco-friendly? To the very deathbed! The British seem to know what they are talking about, by promoting the establishment of green burial cemeteries. They are in fact natural cemeteries in the middle of a forest or a field. It is becoming quite a popular thing to do, resting at the foot of an oak tree or spending the afterlife in a prairie among wild flowers. Many private societies are investing in this increasingly profitable commerce. The first business of that kind opened in 1994. Today, there are more than 200 of them. A burial costs between 120 and 7 000 British pounds (between 220 and 13 000$, as opposed to the cost of a regular burial of about 6 000$, even so, any price is possible). This is an idea that could become very interesting both at an economic and ecological point of view for field and land owners. Those who opened a cemetery on their land noticed 10 times more birds on the lot as well as an increase in biodiversity. The forests being protected by several laws, the burials are well controlled. However, what makes this idea interesting is that a tree acts as a substitute for a tombstone; thus promoting the development of new forests. There are many ways of establishing an eco-friendly cemetery, but the unanimous rule is the use of biodegradable material. Some allow the use of wood, other do not. Many do not embalm or cremate, considering the high level of pollution implicated in these procedures. All in all, no matter what, the planet comes out as a winner. You may now rest in peace by making a contribution to nature!

Thank you for the information. This could be a prime example of a “good practice” that could be duplicated elsewhere. Sustainability is a highly relevant issue. I think at this time it is critical to support and encourage “best practices”, particularly among the business world since climate change affects half a billion people very directly. Today, the global economy demands sustainable solutions and it is the responsibility of businesses to meet these environmental requirements. The question of “How” else can we disseminate best practices becomes all the more important.
