Today we were studying institutions in sociology class. And prison is one of them.
A prison is a place where guilty people according to law are kept for punishment. It is a well known fact, that it holds both good and bad people as recommended by society are kept.
And we came to discuss whether a prison is a school for crime, it is a question that in most cases, when a prisoner comes out of the jail, then he might be more violent and can cause more serious devastations...what do you say?
Is a prison school for crime?
Yes
(5 votes for 62.5%)
No
(1 votes for 12.5%)
It depends
(2 votes for 25%)
Can't say
(0 votes for 0%)

haha yes it is actually, crime is done out of either insanity, insecurity, stupidity, sometimes joy, or just necessity (like theft of food because of starvation), but when you send people to prison especially for long periods of time, you make these reasons for committing a crime seem justifiable and also it becomes sort of an artform because you are housed with people who spend most of their time figuring out ways to avoid the eyes of the law. So yes, in my opinion, when we send people to prison we just make the problem worse, we should rather rehabilitate them in ways that don't make them more susceptible to commiting crimes.
But in all fairness this won't happen because the majority of humanity feels that hiding these elements(criminals) from society in prisons is the best way for progress. Its sad and infuriating that no one cares about these issues, just sweep it under the rug and procrastinate a little while longer before they confront these issues.

The use of prisons to control crime has increased in frequency. The length of time in prison acts as a deterrent to future recidivism.
Three schools of thought dominate the area.
-The first is that prisons definitely suppress criminal behaviour. Given the unpleasantness of prison life and the negative social stigma associated with incarceration, these should serve as deterrents to later criminal behaviour.
-The second, the "schools of crime" viewpoint, proposes just the opposite, that is, that prisons increase criminality. By this account, the barren, inhumane, and psychologically destructive nature of prisonisation makes offenders more likely to recidivate upon release.
-The third school of thought, which we label the "minimalist/interaction" position, contends that the effect of prison on offenders is, for the most part, minimal. This view states that prisons are essentially "psychological deep freezes", in that offenders enter prison with a set of antisocial attitudes and behaviours which are little changed during incarceration. This perspective also suggests that lower risk offenders may be more adversely affected by greater lengths of incarceration through exposure to an environment typically dominated by their higher risk, more hard core peers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- sun-e-boy (सूर्य)

Prisons are definitely schools but not only for filtering the criminal elements in the society but also refining the leadership qualities of Great Persons. History is the evidence for what I say.
Joseph, who was jailed on false accusations of attempted rape on his master's wife, grew to the stature of Minister of Treasury in the cabinet of the Egyptian King. Refer Bible & Quran.
Mahatma Gandhi who was jailed for leading the Indian freedom movement through non co-operation & non-violence, ultimately freed the Indian sub continent from the clutches of Imperialistic British rule.
Jawaharlal Nehru, fine tuned his skills as an author while in jail for leading the Indian freedom movement, and wrote The Discovery of India, a passionate History of India and also later became the first Prime Minister of India.
Nelson Mandela who was leading the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa was jailed for 27 years, yet, he realised his dream of equal dignity for blacks and rose to the stature of the President of that nation.
The list goes on. As for criminals, they need to be treated humanely and given a chance to reform themselves and earn their freedom.

I change my answer to yes. I could n't read the poll correctly previously. Jeffrey Archer's prison diary is an evidence to my yes.
