China responsible for a nuclear war in East Asia?
June 13, 2009 - 03:05 AM

"Our nuclear deterrent will be a strong defensive means...as well as a merciless offensive means to deal a just retaliatory strike to those who touch the country's dignity and sovereignty even a bit," With these words North Korea gave the world notice that it won’t hesitate to start a nuclear war over even the smallest perceived slight. Until now, the fear of a massive nuclear retaliatory strike underpinned the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) which has prevented major wars between the nuclear superpowers. North Korea apparently does not feel constrained by MAD.

Let us not forget North Korea has also actively proliferated nuclear materials and technology in the Middle East. North Korea was involved in Syria’s recent attempt to build a nuclear reactor. In 2005, containers handed over by Libya as part of an agreement to end its WMD program revealed nuclear material traced to North Korea’s Yongbyon nuclear facility. It is only a matter of time before a nuclear “dirty bomb” or even a hydrogen bomb is in the hands of those "dying to die" for Islam, thanks to the North Koreans. Let there be no mistake, when any nuclear weapon is used, it will be easy to determine the origin of the nuclear material and the technology involved.

North Korea is by any measure a failed state, plagued by frequent famines resulting from the country’s incompetent leadership. This North Korean regime is being kept alive by China. Every UN effort to sanction North Korea for its reckless behavior has been toned down by China’s veto threat in the Security Council. The North Korean regime would collapse overnight if China would open its borders and afford the North Korean people refugee status in accordance with the 1951 Refugee Convention (remember how fast the former East German regime collapsed when Hungary opened its borders with Austria?). Instead, China sends the refugees back to North Korea and certain death, while also seeming happy to watch the USA, South Korea and Japan fret over North Korea’s new nuclear capability. Perhaps China hopes Japan and South Korea will turn away from the USA and accept China’s “protection.” Whatever the reason, if North Korea launches a first strike or if any nuclear device traceable to North Korean nuclear material or technology is ever used against a country allied with the USA, North Korea and its allies will suffer the consequences. The time is now for China to show it does not desire nuclear war on its border by using its influence to rein in North Korea’s psychotic behavior.

North Korea supplying nuclear arsenal to terrorists would be risking a third world war. The UN should change - no more permanent members for a level playing field. Chinese action is merely based on the premise that if other nuclear superpowers have nuclear weapons as a deterrent, then the same logic of moral deterrence to use them would be applicable to North Korea. I personally don't believe in sanctions against any sovereign nation. But I feel its of paramount importance to stop nuclear weapons getting into the wrong hands. So maybe opening of Chinese borders to NKn refugees is the solution.
