Social Network Addiction - Is it becoming a disease?
June 9, 2009 - 01:08 PM
|
|
Though there is no actual medical diagnosis of "social network addiction", therapists are seeing more and more cases of people who have their online social lives ravage their personal lives, family and work. For example, the online community Second Life has become a damaging addiction for many, and many spend hours a day on Facebook alone.
Why do you think people get addicted to social network sites? What qualities or functions make it addictive?
And how would one go about beating the addiction? Is it a matter of exercising self-control or sourcing factors in the person's life or lifestyle?

Not just Second Life or Facebook. You can see that many people are so addicted to blogs or some Virtual Society and of course, MMORPG games.
The first thing that I think it can be a reason that, in the world of "virtual", you can be totally different people from who you really are. That's for the games, or some traditional forums that don't require much personal information to sign up.
Second thing is that, you can share with your friends so many things. See the numbers of applications on Facebook! Tons of applications, each of them allow people to comment on it. Sometimes people just stay still in front of the monitor to check "like!" to all his/her friends' post. Of course it's the good side of technology: bringing people closer, but over-abusing is a different problem.
The fact that, I'm kind of that "addicted" rite now. I would feel really irritated if I don't check my game regularly. ** Just need a little time before I can give up on it!!-_-

We should classify it as a lifestyle disease. Recently on mtv the achor was on the streets talking to young people and almost everyone spent four to six hours on an average on facebook. And I'm sure anyone spending too much time on TIG should also be classified as a network addict. LOL. I don't like social networking. I prefer no networking at all. The sky is far too beautiful to ignore. We all should learn to be more responsible and also understand that you don't necessarily have to share every photo with your friends. To learn to accept the real you and change it if you don't liek it than go make an avatar and drool over how cool you look in the non-real life.

Both of you guys raise very good points. It does bring people closer together, but within limits. You may keep in touch with someone by clicking "like" on their Facebook profile, but does it necessarily progress into an offline friendship and encounters?? Back in the day, I was fairly addicted to blogging. Not to become someone else, but for self-expression. I think today's youth, we are seeing a creative bunch who express themselves not only through blogging and profile pages, but pictures, their own graphic designs, and videos.
I agree with Siddiqua, in that there are people who are forgetting to take a break from their computers, and have a whiff of fresh air for the day or actually go out with friends rather than Facebook all day. And that sometimes it's unhealthily used as an escape that helps you avoid issues in your life that someday need to confronted rather than ignored.
And did you mean six hours a week or per day for the Facebook usage?

Wow. That is one time-demanding hobby then. I'd say that's excessive. Can't imagine what you do on there for six hours a day.

you know what people mostly do on facebook. well, for starters there is your status to change every day or wheneevr you log in. and the zillions of fb applications, then there is the photo sharing and snooping around your freinds photo albums and havign a look at their profiles and photos. posting comments, saying hi, checking who is on fb to add as freinds, group activity, .. the list is endless. come to think of it, its an ego-pandering exercise.

social networking for the sake of connecting and mingling is fine, but SIX HOURS.
I read of this one woman who facebooked for over ten hours a week and she was considered an ADDICT.

I see a lot of people becoming anti-social because of social networks. Instead of speaking with someone face to face or picking up the phone they spend hours and hours on sites like Facebook.
When I am at work and on the computer I check it several times a day. I wonder how much more productive I would be if I deleted it from my computer.

Is it creative? Does it inspire? What is it's purpose? Is it a waste of time?
They all make a differance as to the amount of effort that you put into anything. A part of life and technology. It is all in how and why you use it.

well i wont call it a disease, i call it a new way of communication, in social community websites like facebook people can communicate each other specially family friends and old friends in a better and creative way, share photos easily, comments, posts, it is just a perfect example of perfection of social networking.

Well , in my opinion, i think social networks is a way for people who have a lack of communication skills in the real life, i met many people in this networks outside the network and i found that most of them are shy people, they do not have the courage to introduce themself, or start any conversation out side the network. maybe because they lack the confidence.

good - for families/relatives to keep in touch.
good - learning about different cultures, customs, etc.
BUT it's seriously become a disease, little kids in primary school have facebook/netlog/<you> accounts to upload pictures, chat to friends, to spend hours and hours rating other users' photos, etc. WHAT FOR? And not only asocial cases but normal people like you and me. Seriously, many hours a day in front of computer
My kids won't see a computer or a tv. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
