Donateing Blood

I'm from Newfoundland Canada. I've become involved with our local blood clinic, and was wondering if anyone had hints on how to recruit people. As you may or may not know Canada is suffereing from a blood shortage between SARS, West Nile and the power outage, all of which caused blood products to be distroyed. Canadian Blood services say they will need 600,000 New Regular donators by 2005.
I live in a small area. There is about 11,000 spread between two towns. Anyone have done drives that work?

I'm not sure if you're in an area with any type of schooling system, but my schools in the past (both HighSchool and College University) have had great success with blood donations. Its usually easy to spread word though faculty, fliers etc and always have the space or room to accommodate large groups of people. Just a thought. Good Luck.

the first thing you should do is make it aware to tr people that there is a shortage of blood and make it aware that there are many who are in need in blood.this will inspire people to donate.also give the benefits of donating blood to the people.here in my country kenya hospitals go to schools for blood donation.the youth are more willing to donate blood.all the best

I really wish you all of the best luck on your mission. I think th e entire population of Newfoundland is only about 530,000. If you factor in those diqualified that makes the number even lower. Maybe you can spred your search out a little farther. The entire population of Canada is about 31,500,000 pp. I hope you are successful, Good luck!!!

One of the other challenges facing Canadian blood banks is the high mobility of Canadians. Many people are ineligible to donate if they have spent too much time in specific other countries. For example, I have been disqualified for ever donating blood in Canada since I spent more than six months in the UK during the height of the BSE scare.
It reduces the pool of potential donors even further, although it does provide more assurance that the blood supply is safe from diseases.
