Hi Yashoda, You inspire my confidence in your generation...Things that could be included in your speech that would make a difference in our consumption habits...Instead of buying new clothes, buy used clothes. Use your water more than once if possible, for example the same water used to wash dishes in the kitchen can be caught in a wash tub and then re-used to water a garden or flush a toilet instead of letting it go down the drain... Capture roof rainwater for re-use... Many years ago I saw the Prime Minister of India admit openly on television show "60 minutes" that he regularly drinks his own urine for medicinal purposes shocked ...I do not recomend this for myself because it takes water recycling to extreme. Imagine if everyone drank their own urine, the amount of water we could save? Lastly, most people bathe and wash their hair much too often. We could save billions of gallons of water just by bathing less often. A little body odor can be sexy... My dog seems to become sexually aroused by the funky smell of other dogs ( and people ) smile...The possibilities are endless, but our natural resources are not.

It so wonderful celebrating world environmental day but in the area where I come from, we are yet to understand the usefulness and the benefit of taking good care of our environment.
I was about engaging some youth in community cleaning while some parent discourage many of them. I was so sorry for the mentality of our people despite the fact that the end result eventually comes against us in terms of health.
We are only focused on what to Eat always and don't bother much about the situation that affects us solely.

I hope things change systematically, because I am finding it difficult to cope.

Aderibigbe Adedeji David,
I think the reason behind that people are not interested in protecting environment is that...they may have other problems than the environmental issues...so it is not attracting them much.....dont you worry..as it needs time to come up the issue that really matters....Lets be hopeful, people will also be concious about enviroenment as environment and health are interralted..smile

The problem my people face daily is really much but if we don't do something fast about our environment it could be our worse enemy and that will lead to total full blown uneasy problem that we will by force face.
For instance our leaders forgot that they have to do something about the method of cooking, Majority still use STOVE & WOOD majorly which has been increasing GLOBAL WARMING day by day. If that issue is not addressed promptly that means everybody with the poor and old will all be affected.
I hope things change.
I have been trying my best to see to a better and wonderful environment.

The environment is very fragile. Things like climate change are completely destroying it. We need to make sure that we change our lifestyles and also influence others to do the same so that we can save the environment. Most of the governments of the countries of the world have not shown any solid sense of responsibility in protecting the environment, and the UN even though it has tried, it has failed to compel them to do something substantial. In the end it falls to us to make the change, to kick the habit. We have to make sure that, WE the people compel the authorities in our country to save the environment so that it does not to fall to any other organization. One example I can give from my own country. Here in Bangladesh, for many years, the rivers were being ruthlessly polluted and land being occupied by artificial methods. In fact, some of the rivers are so polluted that the central-water supply company has said that it cannot be made into clean water for supply by any cost-effective method. After a new government came to power this year with overwhelming majority and promises of change, the local newspapers and people pushed aside other issues and wrote only about how the rivers were being killed. Everyday there was a new shocking story. Now, at last, the government has launched an action drive against the polluters. This should be an example for all - how sheer pressure from the public can bring about changes. More on that story can be found at [link="http://www.thedailystar.net"]

Every single act counts, and together they can bring about huge changes. Reuse pages, sell paper to recyclers, turn down the air conditioner, change to CFL light bulbs, turn of lights when not being used, turn of monitors, pull of plugs(do not stand by) of electric products, use recycled paper bags instead of polythene - everything counts.

Alex's comment on Morarji Desai (who used to drink his own urine) was funny...lol. I will never drink my own urine. And I agree, people should hand down clothes to siblings, the poor etc as usual. You could also talk about reusing paper. You know, in school, notebooks have pages that are unused at the end of the school year. I know that when I was younger, I used to collect all the pages and get them bound and make a new book just to practice maths, draw etc. I know that quite a few poor kids who could not afford to buy new notebooks each time would do that to use in school. You could talk about encouraging people to use traditional bags that are made by craftsmen because it also in a way preserves culture and art. There are cottage industries here that make bags out of newspapers. They look cool.
I think you should stress upon the disaster that mindless consumption causes.

Thats great you have got a chance to explore yourself. My suggestion is to go through basic matters regarding environment, then the past , present and future scenario of environment and natural degradation, its consequences and the best tips and methods for its sustainable stay. I think sometime minor things also help to deal with major task.Hope, this will be somewhat helpful.
