Criticizing the "experts "in human sexuality?

My friend Dr. Alvaro Gómez Prado, also a colleague, was interviewed in a major newspaper in Panama concerning the "coming-out" process of gays.
His contention was that "sexual orientation does not change."
I read, afterwards, several critics saying that the "so-called experts" -- and Alvaro is an expert -- are wrong as sexual orientation can be changed through behaviour therapy techniques.
Well, among persons that are motivated by Christian dictates, it is very frequent to insist that the above is possible.
The truth is that each person can decide how to live its sex life, but I belive that deep inside what these religious groups want is just to make sure the person of homosexual orientation live a life of "straight social image." They do not care about the individual as such.
In my professional experience of more than 40 years dealing with this subject I have found that people who go through the process of "sexual orientation change" develop long time permanent troubles as depression. And, eventually, they make homosexual escapades with strong fears of being discovered. And the risk of suicide is high.
I have always believed that individual mental health is more important than the wishes of a moral "majority" which does not always set the best examples.

Recently , in Portugal, the media have talked about that question "is it possible or not to change sexual orientation by therapy"..
Thankfully, professionals like you have stated that therapy should help the pacient to accept himself, not to change his nature due to social pressures.
The faster people understand that it is not something that can be avoided or changed , the more impelled they will feel to accept that.
But I can see there is a long way to "walk" in that issue..and I live in Portugal which is a relatively developed country in terms of Human Rights and such..I can imagine how it must be in more conservative countries..

Ana: You expressed my own concerns very well.... it will take a long time. But I'm already 65... though there are younger professionals who are working constantly on the right message.
Thanks for your comment.

My good friend, thank you for this very important topic and i think this are some of the types of things that we should continue talking about so that we can find the right solutions for it rather than keeping silent on the issue.
