Reaching out people: a Cyberspace experience
- Jennifer Federico
Being a person of great willingness to learn more things in life, I took the chance to try myself on the metropolis to gain more exposure and training aside from what I had here in my alma mater, Romblon State College, Odiongan, Romblon, Philippines. I took my on-the job training in one of the prominent firms in Manila with such high tech facilities and services.
What I like most from this training is most essential thing I've discovered through cyberspace or commonly known as Internet at first I was afraid that it would just interrupt my work. However, I did not resist to meddle surfing the Internet for I found out that most of the employees were doing net surfing while working or after they are done with there work. Without asking for assistance from the people around there I courageously experimented with the mouse until I learned those functions of navigational icons and texts. After that, I signed up with yahoo.com, a popular web site in order to have an e-mail address for free. Then, fortunately I found some chat rooms on the web. As expected I joined the chats and I found it funny and interesting. In particular I met new friends as chatmates, from different walks of life, and different parts of the world. I've encountered various individualism, some were sincere others were just making fun of me. Nevertheless, I was so glad for I've been given the chance to reach out and share ideas to some unfamiliar and strange persons in this world. Every time I opened my mailbox, I was so flattered to find new messages from my chatmates and friends and some organizations that i visited on the web. I once joined in the chats for religion and spirituality and learned many things from some religious persons, including priest, minister and even a monk. I took the chance to ask for favor from them and was to pray for me, with the intention to strengthen my faith and made me courageous in facing the challenges in life. This experience made me realized that I need to talk and reach out for our brothers who seemed unreachable because of distance barriers. We could reach them by taking chances to share with them for we may learn from them. We must reach out the unreachable brothers and sisters through cyberspace if we intend to learn and discover more things in life.
In this OJT, I wasn't only trained in dealing with information technology but also dealing with the people engaging on it. That was three years ago, now I am already an IT educator in my own alma mater and currently designing a web site.
