Sanitation, Human Waste
May 22, 2009 - 09:24 AM

The millennium development goal no.7 : ensure environmental sustainability, includes sanitation, ie. access to safe drinking water, access to toilets etc.
Did you know that around the world 200 million tonnes of human waste goes uncollected and untreated per year ? There are ~2.5 billion people without access to good sanitation.

I too would like to add that only 0.4% of water of world is pure...we can critically think what is the access of pure water to the people of the world and the level of sanitation of the people of the world.

"Promote and secure an international agreement and action plan to halve the number of people without adequate sanitation by 2015."

The above statement matches the MDG’s goal.

Poor sanitation and water supplies are the engines that drive cycles of disease, poverty and powerlessness in developing nations. Action to improve sanitation is an important step to enable the poorest people escape poverty.
Safe water supply and adequate sanitation to protect health are among the basic human rights. Ensuring their availability would contribute immeasurably to health and productivity for development.

Let’s hope that promoting sanitation will become a personal priority for the Prime Minister at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Colonial leaders never planned to live in big cities. Most of the cities were designed according to the colonial midframe.Post-indepedence situation was harder for countries as were infighting with in themselves.
Uganda a case study:Europeans and Asians had created aclass among themselves ,living in posh and surbabn areas of the city. The natives living in ramshacked building on the fringes of the city.
The sewage infrastructure was designed to handle less effluent.During the 70s,wars and intertribal conflicts, natives were leaving the villages to cities for safety and employment.Governments spent miiions suppressing rebellions and wars than to invest in Sanitation works
Population increase did not match with infrastructual development. Most of these settlements are on ROAD RESERVES,WETLANDS AND GOVERNMENT LAND
Uganda is an agricultural country with 2 planting seasons. The urban waste is 80% decomposable and biodegradable in nature. The inability of urban leaders to collect the refuse on a timely basis has had a mountain of garbage inside the city, and slum dwellers emptying human waste in drainage channels leading to Lake Victoria.

I agree with jasper bakyayita....there should be proper planning inorder to maintain the sanitation of the urban areas...the planning that were done in 70s are still in use....I mean the planners were not so insightful and farsighted to make plans that enhances the development of the country....

One example of good planning: Delhi, capital of India....it had been planned in 60s or before....it is still workin and it is one of the clean places to live in!!! Thats the example of good planning!!!smile

Despite the wide prevalence of biogas, in India, we still have a huge waste problem. Often outside city limits, pigs do a lot of the good work by cleaning up the waste. They eat all the waste including human excreta. I feel we must use them , like in an organized way to clean our cities. I feel biogas could be used to supply fuel to people who cannot afford or cannot avail of other kinds of fuel for cooking because collecting wood for fuel is harmful to the environment. There are many villages where people don't like the concept of having toilets in or near their homes. They prefer going someplace secluded in the open air. We need to change those attitudes. I guess lack of knowledge about hygiene, and lack of access to water are important factors to consider.

VERMICOMPOSTING TECHNOLOGY is a goof technology but many people dont find it easy means to make manure...some reasons are...earthworms are to bought...also it needs some time to turn degrable garbage to manure.....

In Nepal esp. in Kathmandu also, some people are using earthworms to make manure but its not working upto the mark..

Also, the animals, like pigs can also help in scavanging....its a good idea...

Thanks for this article.Earth worms can be very useful.Earth worms can not process the amount of garbage. Uganda is on the equator, where the air is moist, heavy, humid and excessive rainfall.Nepal has a dry air and cold climate: snow and ice.The rate of decomposition in tropics is higher than in Nepal
Earth worms reproduce by binary means. The problem is having to culture the worms under the perfect conditions
