thats what islam did... made it forbidden
and i'm with Yashoda... start with ourselves.. then our friends and family... and so on
in Ireland... there are high taxes on alcohol.. therefor it's expensive... and not all people can buy it sometimes

As someone from Ireland I can tell you the high taxes do not stop people drinking. At all. I live in a culture where people will always find money for alcohol. And I don't mean alcoholics here, average people. The government have seised well the opportunity to make money from our high alcohol consumption. I think we in Ireland used to have the highest rate in the world, we've dropped to second now I believe.
Having said that alcohol only becomes a problem when too much is consumed.

Well if we believe in Darwin we just do nothing. The very heavy drinkers die young, hopefully without reproducing, and the boozing gene dies with them.

Coming from a European background, alcohol was never as big a deal as it is made out to be in North America. A lot of European countries have drinking ages that are relatively low (13-18, and in some, there is no drinking age), and from experience, alcohol is first introduced at home, with a glass of wine during dinner, for example. I can't particularly speak on behalf of European alcohol consumption, but I believe they have it better. There's much more negative media focus on drinking in North America and the drinking age is higher (at least in the States), whereas in Europe alcohol is just a part of the culture. I think intergeneration and introducing alcohol to young adults in a safe environment such as at home, rather than prohibition works best at reducing alcohol consumption. This, however, does not reduce it to zero, which some people may still find to be problematic.

I think a multitude of great points have been raised in this thread in regards to the safe allotment of alcohol moderation.
With that being said, though it may sound like a practicable idea for parents to introduce alcoholic substances at home, I would have to say that the level of intake a person would take on, whether its heavy or light is dependent on THAT person in particular.
My suggestion, (while not fool-proof and open for further criticism) would be to educate children at a young age, (possibly around grades 2-3) about the hazardous effects of alcoholic substances, but not totally forbid those kids from trying alcohol. Because if there was anything to be gained from history's account of the "Prohibition Era" in the States back in the earlier half of this century, prohibition always garners a greater rate of consumption.
If children are warned, and then left to their own devices to figure out what intoxicating substances can induce, I think we may as well be on our way to reducing alcoholic intake.
Please compound this post with your thoughts.

Alcohol in moderation is very good for you.
I think the young wish to drink themselves into oblivion because they have nothing to interest them. Their lives are empty and so they need to dull the senses with alcohol.
To stop this phenomenum we need to get them interested and employed.
