Look for flotsom (modern stuff that washes in from sea) create a shelter out of palm fronds, search for a place to find clean water. Then I'd carve a stick using a knife or sharp stone and go crab hunting and clam digging. Search for coconuts, bananas and other wild foods. Gather tinder and get a fire going. That would be the most important stuff.

This sounds like playing house. I would try and make myself a home, without a roof initially because I wouldn't know how. I would make myself a bed with dry leaves under a tree, like make myself at home, and then explore the island. The first thing I would search for would be water to drink and wash and something to eat and the first thign I would look out for would be wild animals. I prefer to be marooned without any resident humans on the island.

Really I think being in a desert island will be more tougher than you think.
Now searching for Wild life would be adventurous but how then will you survive if you have no one to cover you?
I'll see to the best possible way of surviving and make a life out of the situation.

Did you mean deserted island or desert island?
I'm going to assume deserted (ie. no one else on the island).
Depending on the time of year, the rough location of the island, and my status, will deiced my first action.
If I've just eaten/drank, then shelter, with a roof, would be #1 priority. If I haven't eaten/drank in a while (more then say 12 hours) finding water would be first priority.
If I knew the location of the island to be tropical, and it was hurricane season, then I would find/make shelter first. Water next. Food after that.
That's my two cents.

I would have to sort out a water supply first as you can live for a couple of weeks without food but only a couple of days without water.
Then source some food, fruits and roots are the easiest, possible shell fish.
Get a shelter sorted out, find a cave if possible, if I have my trusty Swiss Army knife, then I could start to make one from palm leaves and other wood.
Finally try to get a fire going.
Build a large fire on the highest point with some kindling wrapped in something to keep it dry in case I need to be rescued.
Once this is established I would start to explore the island to find out what can be used.
Create a helipad.

I have already learnt about some basic survival skills from the movies like Cast away, Hell in the Pacific and novels like Robinson Crusoe.
In addition to putting my survival skills to test, i would pray God that he send a companion preferably a woman
