What do we not allow ourselves to think about?
May 12, 2009 - 03:09 PM

You'll find there are quite a lot of things we do not allow ourselves to think or talk or ask about. From childhood we learn to instinctively block out any curiosity about these 'forbidden topics'.
Death is an example - it is a region many of us dare not explore.
So is it unhealthy to restrain ourselves from discussing the forbidden topics? Is it bad for our minds to neglect the natural need to know and wonder about things?

What other topics are you interested in, that you feel you can't talk about, and is it about time to loosen up and discuss them?

Death is something we must talk about so we can stop from beeing afraid. There are also social things that we don't dare to talk. When you love someone and he does things that hurts you, we sometimes won't have the capacity of telling the truth. Cause we don't want to lose him. there is also the subject of beeing unable to have a child. It hurts so we don't talk

i don't think we don't allow ourselves to think as long as it's thoughts...
if it hurts people or bad thoughts then we should not allow ourselves to think of....

but thinking of every thing to understand it.. analyze it and reach for a higher levels every time we think

and sometimes we must not allow ourselves to think to focus on what we are doing! like studying

but when we think and speak... yes we are not allowed for example about adult stuff in front of a little kid... maybe he of she won't understand now.. but they will remember it...

and i agree with what NATHALIE said about love thing...

and death... i think it's sometimes good to think and speak about.. coz we are all gonna die after all

There are forbidden topics in our society.....but lets ask ourselves have we left thinking though they are forbidden....

I think that we need to discuss meaningful things to the depth so that we can find a solution to the particular problem or any issues.....

E.G. In developing countries where people are shy of talking about condoms....is it a right thing not to discuss about use of condoms?

There are many forbidden issues in our society but it's we to analyze the thing and give a value whether it is a worth of discussing!!!!

Yes I agree with you - that forcing ourselves to block out these topics that we would ( if it were not for the pressure) otherwise want to discuss, is not good for our spirit, and hinders us from coming to solutions to some important problems like the ones you have mentioned.

We agree then, that we should not be forced to think or not think something?

Well our cultures and traditions play an important role in what they allow us to think about. How can we start loosening up, discussing about the things we are curious about, and give our true opinions, when others in our cultural society look down on us when we do?

These types of problems are deep rooted inour society, we need continous efforts to eliminate or eradicate them..

E.g In Nepal intercast marriage was totally forbidden in past and now people are accepting the marriage in casts that have similar customs and tradition...still if a copule of higest and lowest cast marry then they are looked upon down....but the progress is that the people of Nepal are now are that the cast is just a division of people in the society in accordance to their occupation....and it is because of education and awareness among the people....so the first step could be awareness followed by positive attitude and finally the practice...though it may take a long span of time...and all of us who are aware should put continous efforts to eradicate forbidden things(worth ones).....the time will come when the society will accept our efforts.....

cheers

When I was a bit younger I had the same thinking, when ever I had one of those "Forbiden topics" I would just block it away and try to think about another thing, but lately I started allowing myself to think about everything and anything, and sometime my thoughts get to be heard which might be a really big problem (especially in my family), but I can say that I turned on to be a bit crazy since then (which I love).

And I don't really think it's good to block thoughts what ever they were, our mind was created to think, to wonder, and to function, stopping that would be a crime.

And I almost discussed everything, even though a lot of time I get yelled at and people not completing the discussion (well it happens always but yeah), and I can't blame my family, I mean I have a younger brother and sister who might not be ready to think about such stuff like death, and wither or not we are allowed to think that God exists or not and such things.
