Pneumonia - The silent killer
May 12, 2009 - 12:47 PM

In 2005, the WHO estimates that pneumococcal disease caused approximately 1.6 million deaths, between 700,000 and 1 million of which were children under five years of age. Most of this was in the developin countries where resources are limited and health-seeking behaviour is poor. The sad part about his is that all these deaths were preventable as there is effective vaccine against pneumococaal disease. Another sad side is that very few people know about this silent and forgotten killer.
Pneumonia is the number one vaccine-preventable killer of children worldwide. The vaccines needed are available in the developed countries but not in the developing ones, and upto 15 years difference can be there between introduction of vaccines in developed and developing countries. Also, since pneumonia is not a well-known killer aid often does not go to make the vaccine available in developing countries. For example, a 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was approved in USA in 200 but only came to Bangladesh last year, even though the number of people dying in Bangladesh is much much higher- a conservative estimate puts it at 50000

This itself is bad, but more striking is that even people who survive pneumonia, most of them are left with serious neurological problems like paralysis. This silent killer needs to be addressed and awareness about needs to be spread so that lives can be saved.

Yes, I totally aggree with you that Pneumonia is a silent killer.
Today, everyone tend to just consentrate on other sicknesses but the above sickness is some how dangerious because, its transforms into another sickness like TB if left untreated for long time.
This i experienced during my childhood and had it not been for the help of my elder brother who quickly took me to the doctor, then by now I would have been with
TB. So we must also give its some serious attension with all the necessary materials and conditions.

Yes thats true...
Other diseases seem to get priority always.
This is specially in the countries. It is mostly because pneumonia is often misdiagnosed and remains hugely underreported. But only when in-depth research and studies are done can the true burden of this disease be realized. And because of this the policy makers often do not have evidence to ask for donations from donors. An as you said pneumonia often leads to other diseases. If it does not kill, it often paralyzes its victims for life. The numbers are staggering and sadly, all of this is preventable.
