Freedom Of Information
September 24, 2003 - 02:59 AM

It sometimes seems as if anything and everything is found within the media. The media is a never ending road with current events, sports, entertainment and politics being its terrain. All these aspects and more are all integrated into the media, we viewers take it in. What real affects do the media have on us? Or better yet, who’s to say what the media should publish?

In my opinion media is one of the most liberated industries out there. Whatever has the appeal to the people, it WILL be printed. Personally, if I’m interested in something, I want the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Whether or not it’s bias, I want to hear about it. Issues like the SARS outbreak in Toronto need to be discussed truthfully, without having to be sugar-coated.

Which brings me back to my point, Is and will information be withdrawn from us if it has no appeal?

But then again, who’s to say what we want to hear about? This is why media is free to publish information on such issues. It doesn’t matter what we want to hear, the biases included. But what is truly going on.

The only restrictions that should be made in the media should be of matters not related to the people. But as I’ve said in the past, people are the media. Nothing should be withdrawn from us if it results in the lack of knowledge on a significant issue.

But what about when information needs to be withheld to protect the safety of another person? Where does the public's right to information infringe on an individual's right to privacy?

Saddly, today in the United States our society is compelled by one or two things... Looks and food. They want to look elegant, but they want to eat all these incredibaly fattening foods... It doesn't add up... I think todays society needs to be informed many times about everything. We can not assume that Americans have common sense. We don't need the fine print... We need the bold print... America sees something on a television set: "Guaranteed to make the guys grin" (I realize that was an extreamely poor example, but I don't come up with the slogans. They have marketers to do those things.) But at the bottom there is a paragraph of fine print... We don't want the fine print!!!! Make it bigger!!!!!
