Media and Youth
September 24, 2003 - 01:25 AM

As a girl working towards graduating high school, I know exactly how it feels to spend nearly 10 hours in a school working my butt off. And when the bell rings, all I want to do is flop on the couch and watch some television. This now brings me to my topic of discussion. How many students do you think fall into my situation? Answer: majority, if not all. And when we watch television, of course we look to be entertained.

I’m not going to bother denying the fact that the media does have a substantial amount of power, seeing as it is one of our greatest socialization agents. And I hate to admit the fact that “Monkey-see, monkey-do” is still an issue with us youths today. So many of us claim to be independent, and that we make our own choices. However, I beg to differ. Think about how we live, and what’s socially accepted. Then ask yourself: Who’s making these choices? Why are we the way we are? We sink into the shadows if we don’t support a new, hip trend. And disappear when we go against popular demand. And why is all this happening?

The answer is in the most obvious of all. It is a striving industry called, media. It’s everywhere we are, and in everything we do. Picture life without it. What will you have then? Solitary confinement. Doesn’t sound very appealing does it? We can’t just get up one day and decide to disengage ourselves from the media. That would be like picking yourself out of society. The media as it is almost seems eternal.

So am I wrong to think that the media is another matrix, that we’ve come captive to?

okay
Not saying that I never ever eeeeeever conform, because sometimes I do without realizing it
However, for the most part, I couldn't care less what the media is trying to backhandedly persuade me to do/be
Especially seeing as how I've grown up in the urban, hip hop community, media really effects the world around me.
My grandmother brought this to my attention a few days ago in one of our many discussions, and I hate to admit how right she is. She was basically saying that it's so sad how this particular hip hop generation is. If you notice, it seems as though we're all a bunch of mindless drones. There is barely any individualism. On a routine walk through the streets, you'll see a bunch of white t's and jerseys
And all the girls dress pretty much with the same style, which just basically includes pants that are so tight you can see what the sista had for breakfast, and a tight shirt of some kind.

The way I was raised is to be myself, at all times. Rarely will I wear that mess that you see on the music videos, which is where the girls get it from anyway. I've never seen myself as fitting a mold at all, and I think that most people that know me would agree.

But it really is true how media affects us as youths. We're all so busy now emulating what we hear or see in mass media that barely anyone is really themselves anymore

sad really
