Our (high) school offers international exchanges through AFI, and we have quite a few students who are part of international exchanges.
One of my best friends had a exchange student stay with her for a year and so I got to see for myself how exchange students are like since I went to her house often. I thought that it was one of the best ways that you could learn another language and culture of another country since it is all around you. My friend's parents would help the student out if she didn't know something and explain it fully with the way they understand it, which is probably better than if you learnt it at school.
I've heard those who have been to other countries that it gives you a whole new perspective on the world around you and about yourself.
One exchange student said in her speech about perspectives through metaphor. One country or culture sees everything through their blue glasses. To them everything is blue. One girl went to another country with a different culture and there they wore yellow glasses and everything they saw was in yellow. All her life she has been wearing blue glasses, so she didn't understand what these people were on about. But after a while, she started to see things the way others saw it. By the time she went back to her home country, she saw everything in green.
It's also think it's a better way to experience a country than if you were to go on a OE (oversea experience) since you have a family that can help you experience everything.

I haven't been on an exchange program thus far, but I had an exchange student from belgium live with my family a few years back.
In my opinion, students should be chosen based on their level of openness to experiencing other cultures. They should be whole-rounded students who are willing to learn, adapt and at the same time teach their hosts about their own culture.
Student exchange programs are a great way to foster cross-cultural understanding and at the same time create friendships that will last a lifetime. I learned a lot from the guy my family hosted, and I think he learned a lot too. When they go home, you feel like you're losing a member of the family. Overall, its a worthwhile experience and anyone who has the opportunity to experience it should definitely go for it.

Like Shobana, i haven't been part of an exchange student program, though our school has sent a lot of students to other countries. Probably because of a very tight competition in our school.
Our school chooses a student to be part of international student exchange programs based on their performance, credentials, skills, interests, and attitude.
Several of my friends who had been sent to other countries say that aside from being introduced to the host country, they got to learn more also to different countries' culture and people through their student representatives as well. The experience was great!

Hi all,
I actually held an interview with a friend from school who has been here on an exchange program with AFS for nearly a year now.
I filmed this interview and will upload it tomorrow
Its quite interesting as she compares NZD life to life in the Netherlands. She also agrees on Zays statement about the blue and yellow glasses turning in to green vision.

I've joined on AFS Program to Japan in 2007. Yeah, that's really great. Going abroad and learn more about its culture open my perspective about the world it self. and Now, i'm handling the selection for my juniors to join this program.
Beside it, exchange program also gives us lot of benefits. We can be more independent and solve the problem by our self.
That's one of best moment in my life.
