The fading cultures
September 23, 2003 - 12:37 PM

For centuries, most asian societies have been trying pretty hard to conform to western standards and so has the cultures of these societies.
I am very proud of my culture yet i see it fading. many youths now view their own ethnic cultures as a thing of the past. if everyone were to continue to think like that, what would happen to our cultures? i may be living in a cosmopolitan country with 4 major races but everyone wants to be american these days! im not saying americans are not good but it baffles me to see that everyone is trying to conform to a standard and culture that isnt there's. i dont want my culture to fade. do you want yours to be?

Culture can't simply FADE!!!
September 23, 2003 - 02:56 AM

Well... I certainly do agree that I see life around me influenced by cultures from other countries. But that in no way has come anywhere close to threatening my own culture. So... the question of indigenious cultures fading simply doesn't arise. Perhaps thats because... India has always been a melting point of cultures. I mean life in India is so diverse and hetergenous, that people over the ages have learnt to adapt and live with new cultures, while retaining their own identity.

The best example I can quote regarding culture being so rich that it can't fade away so easily is MTV! Almost 10 years ago when the channel was first launched in India... it was totally American. After the initial hype the channel simply failed to take off. Its TRP ratings had hit rock-bottom. Then they hired new VJs... all of them Indian, brought in an entirely new production crew, and revamped the whole channel, making it truly Indian in its outlook. The result was amazing... MTV became one of the most watched channels among the youth... almost overnight. What happened as a result of it... was couple of dozen other music channels opened.... each of them more regional than the other. And all of them use their Indianness as their USP!

not at all.

i do agree with you somewhat. but living in a place like singapore, a cosmopolitan society, no one really gives a care about culture. almost everyone here want to be western and i dont see why. the youths here arent exactly proud of their cultures, some dont even know much about their own cultures. the people who practice their cultures are actually the older generation.
my ancestors were born in china but that was years ago. now im singaporean and quite far from my roots. do i really have to go all the way back to know more about my culture?

Well here in the US, even though there are a multittude of cultures, unfortuantly a lot of people here including people of different ethnicities are submitting to the monocentric culture of 'america'. It's mostly because people here are too self-centered, and narrow minded to adapt, and learn from other cultures, and accept them full heartedly due to the government and a lot of citizens shallow views. Yet when people from another country, let's say a Dinka man from Sundan tries to assert, he will easily assimilate into some culture circles (Mostly african american groups.) since a lot of people here do accept the fact that their are 'minorties', but they don't wish to get to know their culture or various points of view the immigrant or traveler mostly since people feel like it is a waste to undertand, and also their own sublimital racist views on people restrict that urge to care and longing to know more about the person's culture. And because of this, and a few other smaller problems, its a bit hectic to get used to american society, at least comfortably if your not native to the country, and also racist runs rampant due to people who want nothing to do with people that are not originally from their race or culture.

I am all for multicultured society, and would do my best to ensure it asserts into the minds of the next generation, and even this current one as much as possible. But it will be a very hard task, since people here don't want to give any thought or heart into becoming one or understanding the various foreigners cultures.

(I hope this all made sense. I've been up all night, so my train of thought is bit jumpy.)

Have a nice day!,

Dale

what is my culture?
September 30, 2003 - 10:59 AM

american culture... what is it? i was born in the U.S. and i have lived here for 17 years. if i was to describe america in general, i would have to say that americans are lazy, fat, and self-centered. granted, there are many people in my country who are very productive and create positive impacts in the world, but basically, to me, america is mostly known for eating too much food and constantly craving entertainment galore. i am not proud of this at all, and my desire is to learn about cultures outside of the states in order to gain respect for the customs of a certain people.

thanks,
tim

P.S. why is it that people want to adopt american ways? and what ways are they wanting to adopt?

This issue really interests me. Is the world, or the Asian societies for that matter become increasingly homogenous and similar to American culture, all the more fueled by the easier flow of information, technological developments, and unhampered trade?

I believe it's relative. Some cultures are receptive to foreign influences. English is much desired in my country, for example and so is 'fair' as skin color. Some countries are not as receptive. And there are also certain cultures which adopt the influence and adapt them to their own unique contexts. Mcdonald's has introduced this fastfood industry but in the Philippines, a local food chain beats it in market share. Why? Well, Jollibee (which has since become a symbol of Filipino ingenuity) has made it's service very homey, and more important, it serves what we really like best: chicken and rice. You can't expect to dominate the market if you only serve hamburgers. Local movies also dominate. Well, I don't want to reduce culture into these examples, since it is far beyond it, but as a starting point, that's how it goes here. :-)

America is everywhere-music, television, cyberspace, movies, politics. Popular culture is dominated by everything American. And admittedly, many also hold American values dearly- rule of law, egalitarianism, economic fredom, democratic institutions.

What makes America so superior?
October 19, 2003 - 04:56 AM

I just don't get it. Yes, I am American. Yes, I love my country, but why would anyone want to make one culture superior to all others? I think the majority of Americans need to open their eyes to the possibility that there are other cultures worth learning about out there. Our nation has forgotten the foundation it was created upon....other cultures! Each different culture in the world, its diversity, its different components, that's what makes the world such an amazing place! Lets not forget our differences, lets embrace them.

This is quite interesting that the awareness is waking up. For goodness sake how can 1 culture go round the whole world, and you can see the evil of society today, this mono-culture has eventually corrupted and polluted others to the extent that many cultures have sunk while others are in the process of ...................................

I think we should face the challenge of re-directing our various culture back to their original route to avert a terrible damage to our future generations.

ALL YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE A GREAT TASK TO FIGHT THIS SCOURGE.

PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
