Peripheral Learning: The way to go about it >> Video Games

Hi guys,
I found out about this interesting idea some days back when I was discussing this forum with one of my teachers.
We had a long talk on how one can really inspire students to learn through technology, keeping their interests alive all the while, and getting them to be more curious and eager about certain topics. Supposedly, there is a concept called Peripheral Learning. Let me explain this through an example:
We all have heard of video games like Bioshock, Age of Empires and Crisis. Apparantly, they all encompass a set of learning techniques known as peripheral learning. Peripheral learning is basically a way of encouraging students to indulge in self learning through indirect techniques. If you have played Age of Empires, am sure you know a lot about historical events, and figures like Joan of Arc through various 'campaigns' within the game. Here and there, you'll see small snippets that give you background information about various wars, events and people. It even encourages players to go online and research more individually about that particular campaign. Sometimes, to cross a level, you essentially need to indulge in self research. This way, while keeping the fun element alive, players are able to learn a lot. Similarly, for games like Bioshock, which eventually ask the player to either save a character in the game, or use it for more power, help instil moral values in players.
There are a lot of other games as well which help promote this idea. I agree that video games have long had a lot of criticism attached to them. But in the present world of technology, am sure, this mode can be very well explored to achieve our objective in this forum.
Looking forward to discussing this in depth.

This is a very good point sagar. I agree that video games are an ideal method when its comes to self-learning. I myself have learn alot from some games that explore history, geography etc.
As you said video games are subject to a lot of criticism mainly because a big chunk of it involves violence, etc.
But I totally support the idea of including educational video games in the classroom. It keeps students interested and motivated to have the highest score and is a great way to include technology. I'm confident that as more schools include educational video games in the classroom, game makers would see the demand to produce educational material instead of violent ones, thus putting an end to criticism.
It may take some time, but hey, nothing comes easily.
I really like the idea. Thank you for posting this. Looking forward to reading others view.

Here in my country, video games are very common. And I think using video game as a pattern or method of imparting knowledge is a good motivational technique because students will absolutely enjoy learning. There are softwares already that are using this kind of technique/strategy and it is somehow effective.
