[Poll] Where are your resources from??
May 3, 2009 - 04:00 AM

Where are the resources you use for your school work from??

Is it from the 'traditional' way, going to the library and getting out a book or two, looking it up in your school text books?

Or going straight on to the computer and looking it up through Google?

Or is there any other way that you get your information? (If so please specify)

Also, does it seem as if your teacher(s) lean towards one way of getting your information? For example, do they take you to the computer suit or the library for research?

One of the things I really enjoy about using the internet for school work is that you have access to many books online. I still enjoy the experience of spending time in a library, but for education to be globally accessible, and for everyone to have the best opportunities as possible available, I think we need to make sure teachers know how extremely valuable the internet is as a resource.

But you have to remember that a lot of the information on the internet is unreliable. How valuable is the internet when you don't know how much of it you can trust??

Zay, I get more resources from the internet. I used those sites which are popular and reliable. However, I still go to library and do the traditional way of researching. It makes my life so easy when I use the internet.

I usually use the internet most of the time, but I also use books, magazines, journals, etc. Sometimes I search for the book title online then I go to the local library and request for it. Saves me a lot of time.

Do you think that by spending the majority of your research time searching on the internet, it is harming your 'research' skills?

I know that its so easy for me to copy paragraphs of useless information to use on a research assignment when I'm using the internet as it only takes up maybe 3 minutes of my time. However when I use books I tend to only copy the most relevant of information because as it takes me longer, I want to make sure I only get what I need.

Do you think that the way of online research is actually harming our skills? We are now loosing even the skill of time management! No wonder students can never find enough time to finish that asignment they had 6 weeks to do!!!!!!

When it comes to school work, I love to use textbooks. After class I spent around 3 hours for library work. It is because in books, topics are chronologically arrange and in detailed. But, of course, I never neglect the use of the internet. I only use internet to verify some info, because sometimes there are websites that present only summarized or edited info. And, also to acquire updates on the the topic which is probably not on the books I've read.

I totally agree with you. We should never rely on the internet alone for research. It's so easy to plagiarize info but when it comes to books we have to get down and look for the important info ourselves. Not as simply as typing in a search engine.

As my teacher once said, she could see the difference between students who copy and paste and those who actually did their work. How? Students who copy and paste usually present a lot of useless information that sometimes don't even have relevance to the topic.

Even when I attend debates, I can tell the difference between those who actually researched and wrote their own speech and those who just took it off the internet.

I see what you mean there Jessie, by using the sites that are popular and reliable. But you have to remember that there are still site that are considered to be reliable and popular that still have incorrect information. I can't give specific examples right now, but I have had information from reliable and popular sites that contradict those from other reliable and popular sites.

I think using a range of sources is the best way to go. If we rely too much on the internet, we're gonna expect everything to be so instant like the internet.
Before when we had to research via books, you had to go through the indexes to get exactly what you wanted otherwise, as Marcus said, it would take longer. But now, we only have to type in keywords in to the Google search box, and bam, your answers are all there. So what happens when all the 'answers' are half par to what you really want? Most students don't go that extra mile to find what they really want since they haven't developed those researching skills.

I know everyone uses either internet- or software-based info or book/magazines/journals/interview resources when doing research. It may differ only on how we compare and contrast the info we gather and how we intellectually sort it, and probably how we are comfortable and satisfied with our resources.
