What would you do if you were the Minister of Education?

Another thread for imagination. Hmm, not actually imagination, who knows you will become the Miniter of Education someday. If the time comes, what will you do about your country's education system? What will you change and what will you keep?

It's such a beautiful idea. If I were the Minister of Education, I would envisage an action plan to develop and change our out-of-date education system. My ideas would be:
1. I would shuffle my cabinet before propose any projects. The young and talent people would be priorities in my list.
2. I would rather spend our money on building schools and purchase new equipments for teaching than wasting it for our tough national examinations.
3. English would be taught as a second language at schools. It must be a compulsory subject.
4. "Man are created equal" therefore there would be no kind of school like "key school". Everyone has right to be trained and educated equally regardless of race, religion, age, status...etc.
5. I am thinking about it, when it comes i will let you know!

A very good question!
Lets see.
1. I would have all the textbooks revised so that it will be updated with latest happenings, etc. Especially history.
2. Place less emphasis on exams, instead focus on molding an all-rounded student.
3. Agree with duhless.Equal opportunities for all! No cluster schools that get more funds than the other. Its as if we're looking down on students from the other schools.
4. Every gets equal rights when it comes to university placement regardless of race/religion.
5. Work on getting rural schools updated in order to be competitive with urban schools.
That's just a few to name. I'll think of more soon! Again, great topic!

1. Encourage participations from different Education sector that is of students, teachers, administrators, and parents. So that they may be able to voice out their concerns directly, and to form and to implement action plans based on their suggestions and comments.
2. Improve and update teachers' educational attainment/acquired by conducting continuous professional education covering various topics concerning all elements that has a direct and indirect contribution to the improvement and/or development of education.
3. Improvisation and construction of more modern school facilities especially in rural areas and to provide school materials (books, journals) which are updated, less to no mistakes in inputs, and appropriate to the level of understanding of the students.
4. Revise obsolete curricula. Therefore all curricula should be based on the latest trend in education by incorporating various scheme or teaching methods and level and nature of discussion, based on students' knowledge and skills, as patterned to global education system. This is to ensure global compeitiveness of the students.
5. Revise examination format. Instead of just the usual type of exams with obvious answes at times, Questionnaires should require students to critically think for the best answer and should be able to expand the answer. To ensure that the students are not just using their luck to be able to conclude for the right answer, but of course, using their knowledge and reasoning.
6. Ensure that each and every child/student should be catered to a school, that no one will be left behind or unable to study because of poverty, by providing subsidies, scholarships, grants, and other options for students like that of "Study now, Pay later" program.
7. Develop a program that will connect the school administrators and the family to work together to ensure quality education is being taught in school and at home, and to develop an open communication between the parents and the teachers.
For now, these are the things I would like to be implemented if I will become a Minister/Secretary of Education...

Yup I come from the same country as yours so I can understand why you want to do that.
1. Why do you separate young and talented people? What are you gonna do with them?
2. Agree, building schools and purchasing equipments are necessary. I don't know why our government spend so much money on chaning textbooks back and forth, and our examination system is still not working so well. But if I were the Minister of Education, I would be willing to spend money to develop our valuation system.
3. I think English is taught in most schools in Vietnam now. But it doesn't seem so effective.
4. Err what do you mean by "key schools"? Are they schools for gifted students or what?
5. Sure, I'd love to learn more about it.

Let me be clear:
1. I don't separate anything. I was wondering do you understand the difference between "and" & "or". Maybe you are not studying in law field, so i understand why you asked me like that.
2. What do you mean exactly our valuation system? Is it like quality control and quality assurance?
3. You're right! English is widely taught in schools.
4. "key-schools" is seminary.
5.yeah. Plz wait...

3. Hmmm.
4. You seem to be disappointed with your curriculum. How obsolete is it now? Is it from 7 to 11 or 9 to 3?
5. It will take a lot of time for sure
6. Haha I misunderstood "Study now, Pay later" with "Study now, Play later" at first :P It reminds me of "HECS-Help" in the Australia (Thanks Ben for your information).

Well, the exams in Malaysia are too textbook based. As long as you memorize everything in the textbooks, u'll be sure to get an A. Students dont have the opportunity to think for themselves, to voice their own views or perspectives on the given topic.
Bout the equality, I meant within my country itself.

1. Ok ok, it is not a big deal anyway.
2. Valuation system is a system to valuate students' achievements (it can be exams) and teachers' contributions and the effectiveness of education in general. You know, even the number of dropout students we are using is provided by some newspapers, not by Ministry of Education.
3. But if I studied English only at school, I wouldn't never be able to communicate in English lolz.

The same goals? For what? To practice English? It's not that easy haha. I don't know why but most English clubs I know can't remain so long. To speak well, you need some good English speakers to guide you.

Hi Chip!
#1,2,7 items... Yes, I believe technology can help us. Like parents can be updated regarding the performance of their children through SMS, MMS, or email as long as it is on the database of the school. For the teachers, the only way that they can develop their teching strategies/abilities is to be updated through continuing professional education (CPE) which may be in the form of seminar-workshops, conference or fora. CPE, here in the Phils as far as I know, is cumpolsory with around 60hours contact time provided with certificates to be able to renew your liscense.
#3 item... Maybe you are curious why I include it. Its because if you can only see the situation of the school facilities especially in rural areas, you may say that it is somehow not a good learning ambience. Some students have their class under the tree, classroom intended for 30 students is being occupied by 60 students....
#4 item... I'm not really disappointed with the curriculum in our country, anyway I can see that the Education department is doing their best to improve and to update the curriculum in our country... Its just that based on my observation, the same curriculum pattern that my mom taken up way back on her school days, is almost the same with our curriculum today with only very few revisions. Probably they can compare and contrast other countries' curriculum to meet global demands and competitiveness.
#5 item... Yes, I agree with you, but it is somehow being done already bit by bit...
#6 item... I understand you with that. The first time I encountered the word, that also came to my mind. It is being materialized here in the Phils but only in a very few institutions. Its like a policy of UK for their students that they can study and finish University and after they have their work already, that will be the time that they can pay the school or the company will be the one who will going to pay to the school.
We have also "Fly Now, Pay Later" program as well for those who would like to work abroad.... some kind of a relationship in rhyming. hahaha
