The following things should be fufilled
1. Firstly we need to start from ourself ie the hard feelings about a girl, she is not different from a boy. Equal opportunities and encouragement should have to be given to her.
2. Education is the foremost thing to wipe out the discrimination for the girls.
3. Equal employment opportunities.
4. Support to the activites that a girl is doing and suggestion to them would be best.
5. Motivation and counselling to partipate, dissemination and sharing.
6. If possible an environment should be created to involve her in extra curricular activites, sports to make her body and mind function properly.

Well, as a matter of fact, girls need be given equal opportunities like boys because they are equally important to us.
What need be done is forming simple groups that have firstly to educate the public about the practice and there after mobilize the young girls, telling them the actual danger behind this practice.

I agree with you....Awareness and mobilization of girls through groups could be one of the ways to abolish the discrimination....

It depends on which part of the globe you stand...What I mean by this, is when I answer this question I must look at it through "As a Westerner, what do I believe we (westerners) can do to abolish this act?" As a foreigner I only have an outside perspective, and thus can only do AS SUCH.
I say this, because one of the solutions is, to all problems, to always consider doing nothing. It is not our culture or our lives in stake and we have little power in choosing or condemning what others practise.
Secondly, we can condemn this act as well as those doing the act, and those allowing it to continue. We do everything we believe can eradicate such a practise. Perhaps this means, pushing International Organizations such as the UN, to review their efforts (I believe it is condemned by the commission of Human Rights. How is that accomplished? It is not an easy task (as is not any large endeavour such as this). Bring in the big powers, organizations, laws, education etc…
We must thus ask ourselves where the power in this issue lies. This is all based on a social structure. It is not done for health reasons, but ceremonies and traditions. As one of my educator’s said, “Women are the guardians of this practice, the power they lack elsewhere is yielded in protecting their customs and traditions.” Since this is a social structure, it has less to do with what the UN can enforce but what the local leader support. Social change must first come from within.
So the last option is therefore a tricky one. I myself had never considered this, untill it was mentioned by one of my professor's teaching assitants. Do not eradicate the practice. With over 100-140 million girls worldwide, the thought of ending such a practice is daunting (but of course, impossible is not a plausible word). We must recognize the possibility of helping the girls instead of fighting the practice. Medicalize it, provide NGO’s these tools. Instead of using knives, scissors, sharp objects, provide groups with sanitary options.
This is a tough issue because it is not a right or wrong issue, but a choice. So we either, condemn there choice (in our belief that it is against human rights) and push organizations such as the United Nations to do what they can (the question of their power in this issue, must also be recognized). Or, we provide ways in which we do not SUPPORT the act, but instead at least provide some form of relief, in this case sanitary tools and education.
Issues such as these are issues for this reason, and not problems. There are no clear solutions and answers but only options.

I just can't agree with the content of the last post. Yes, female genital mutilation is a "choice." Cannibalism, genocide, pedophilia, etc., are all choices. They are choices to commit crimes, physical mutilation and abuse of the human body (usually somebody else's body!). Cutting off the clitoris and the labia of a young girl just boggles my mind. The physical and emotional pain involved may someday go away (it usually doesn't), but she will probably never experience an orgasm the rest of her life. This crime should not be ignored or facilitated.
I have heard great strides have been made against this practice by NGOs which seek out the women who perform this cruel procedure (usually for money) and offer them different employment. The trend is down for this procedure and we should do everything to hasten its end.

ofcourse, I totally agree with my friend with the last post as the practice is a complete abuse and violation of the rights of a womanhood and and also their dignity as women. this practice is particularly increasing in the African continent which some of us will no longer allow to continue. as a result, some young dynamic young persons from Sierra leone in West Africa are going to take this issue very seriously with various campaigns through different means as we strongly believe in social change regardless of the called barbaric culture which is slowly eaten into the fabric of our societies in Africa.
Therefore, any body interested in this issue can reach us at this email regardless of your geographical location.
advocate1online@yahoo.com and kindly feel free to come forward with any action you may have in mind as they will be welcome seriously.

Of course, I agree as well. I think my post came off a little wrong. I am not saying this is a right or wrong issue at all. It is a crime in our eyes, but that is why it is an issue. If we did not have a problem with this “choice” then we would not be having such a difficult time ensuring this practise is stopped. Of course we disagree with it. Saying it is tradition, does not mean I am saying it is something we must agree with. But that we must understand the extent of such a practise. To solve anything you must know all its roots, and possible solutions, whether or not they are relevant to what YOU (or I) would see as a solution. These options I mentioned above were all brought up by a master’s student who was trying to advocate that we must question how to take our perceptions and advocate them in another country. Do we have this right, if we believe it is wrong? For instance this goes against the Canadian criminal code section 268 (3), but how has that translated to stopping this act? If we accept westerner’s roles in this abolishment, then we must create a correlation between the two. And that is why the other options are brought up, what if we indeed have no authority? That it is purely a social, internal issue? This brings up question of intervention, the rule of states, power of state over another state, sovereignty, international governance and ect…. It should be stopped. Yet there is a question of authority and power and of human rights. It is great to see internal action against it, because that is the biggest step that could be taken.

hey my friends, why do we still holding on to some of these things that are taking the world's developmental agenda backward? i think we are or should be above that now. i mean we should some how forget about this geographical bounderies and treat issues of importance without waiting for things to get worst before we start finding solutions for them. this is just an indication of some of the problems we are faced with and while others quickly show solidarity with us and others wait for things to get worst before they could intervain. today so many innocent souls are dieing in Africa through brutal armed conflicts of which the arminations are been imported beyond Africa. so what can we say about that? do we wait to see these innocent souls suffering through the wickedness of those trading these arminations to Africa. So are you telling us that because you are not in Africa so any thing that happens there is Africa's business? Please let us as change makers put these type way of thinking and address issues of human interests and completely forget about this racism.
i am perfectly convince that there are so many foreign nationals who are seriously concerned about some of the abuses and violations in Africa. Therefore, i join my African colleagues to thank all of you who look at us beyond the skin as we are also looking at you beyond the skin.

First we should tackle the hospitals, clinics and doctors. They have to report any child who has had her genitals mutilated and the parents have 'We are sadistic bastards and need to have our butts kicked down the road.' tattooed on their forehead and have to spend any free time in prison.
Then hunt down the priests, doctors and anyone else who can be found to be involved in the mutilation of a child be chained to a pickup truck and dragged around town.
This pracise must be stamped out and stamped out NOW. It is a disgusting practise that serves no purpose in the life of human beings.
For the religious, if a human is made in the image of the god, whichever it is, then they exactly in the image of your God and should not be cut about.
Sorry, I guess you can guess I am very against this disgusting thing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jo Devizes knows a womens website that is rather good.

Sorry, I guess you can guess I am very against this disgusting thing.Well, Ms. Devizes, I'm glad to see there are some issues on which you feel human action is needed.
When I saw you had posted here on the FGM thread, I was worried you would repeat your philosophy stated in the Environment Forum:
"That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger."

i would like to thank every one who made their comments to this very important topic including even those infavour of its. let me also make one thing clear that this post was never made by any master's student but that I Sahr Yillia, born and grown in Africa who though not a woman but have great concern over the cruel and barbaric treatments they are going through. So please we should not just live them to continue suffering but rather we should elp them through whatever means be it social, physical, spiritual, moral and so on.if any body need further clarification on this issue then, i will be most willing to provide them with the full details. infact, we have now designed a programme where we will do a short skit and documentary which we will make available to every one in the world as soon as we complete the process.

Sahr, I think your comment was just wonderful. Too many people in the "West" engage in "cultural relativism" which says we should not make judgements about practices in other cultures, because "who are we to say our Western culture is better than any other?" I belong to the "absolutist" camp which says all people, no matter what culture they live in, deserve to live in dignity and safety. FGM is a terrible practice which tells women there is something wrong with their bodies and they do not deserve to have any sexual pleasure. This is a crime I rank right up there with murder, a most important part of a human's life is being killed. I also don't hesitate to criticize Western culture when it violates human rights, such as when religious people try to deny women the right to an abortion. As you said, it is time we stopped making national and cultural distinctions and instead say we are all brothers and sisters here on Earth. We are all Earthlings and we must not close our ears when small girls are screaming in agony, trying to, but not able to, run away from this incredible pain called FGM. Good luck with your project.

I think the issue of FGM is quite complex in that it is culturally ingrained and there are different practices across cultures. For example there are varying degrees of mutilation, ranging from relatively harmless cuts to full on infibulation. Also, it must be stressed that while women are usually the ones to perform the practice, those that do have had it done to them, and are familiar with the pain and complications. Therefore it is clear that the practice is a result of powerful social forces in these cultures calling for the disfigurement of women, usually to make them more attractive to men. It is then essential that to put an end to the extreme forms of FGM, men must play a role in social change.

I agree with Cherise. FGM is a complex issue because it's culturally ingrained. Just as certain cultures used to elongate the necks of their women with heavy rings or used to bind the feet of their women to keep them small, FGM is a cultural practice that isn't seen as wrong in the eyes of a lot of the people who practice it.
I personally think it is a horrible thing, but does that give us the right to stop something that has been so prominent in their culture?
We should educate those involved with the practice so they realize that the benefits of this practice are significantly low compared to the benefits of getting rid of this tradition.
